CHEMIST

Overview: You will serve as a CHEMIST in the Laboratory Quality and Accreditation Office (Code 1561), Quality Performance Control Division (Code 1560), Naval Shipyard Support Office (Code 1500), at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities:

• Sample and analyze instrumentation to interpret data from materials testing and environmental investigations across a wide variety of investigations and programs.
• Plan, review, and report routine and non-routine sampling and testing programs.
• Operate instruments such as mass spectrometers, mercury analyzers, infrared spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, ion chromatographs, etc.

Qualifications:

• Minimum qualifications for GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑09 level, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Experience demonstrating knowledge of analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry and statistics. Experience with general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, ISO/IEC 17025. Experience utilizing quality assurance and quality control procedures and requirements specifically ISO 9000 and ISO 17025. Experience applying chemical principles to assigned projects where precedents are not directly applicable.
• Minimum qualifications for GS-09: At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑07 level, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Experience applying current environmental chemistry and materials test methods, standards and practices in quality control, including local and corporate policies and procedures. Experience planning and executing laboratory audits and assessments, including review of quality control procedures, data and quality documents. Experience providing technical support for various navy environmental investigations.

• Work may involve exposure to harmful physical and chemical agents (fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals); participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
• Position may require travel within CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.

Education:

Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by coursework in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
