This position is located in the Facility Maintenance Service Line at the Central Western Mass VA Medical Center in Leeds, MA, under the HVAC & Mechanical Shop Supervisor. The role involves modifying, maintaining, and repairing various high, medium, and low-pressure piping systems.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Designing, inspecting, installing, modifying, repairing, and maintaining compressed air, natural gas, steam, plumbing, and water systems.
  • Using blueprints, sketches, and work orders to complete projects.
  • Repairing valves, pipe leaks, and obstructions, and ensuring proper system operation.
  • Operating trade tools and equipment such as grinders, pipe threading machines, and welders.
  • Supporting engineering and project management with design, code compliance, and installation of plumbing and piping systems.
  • Inspecting fabrication and installation of various piping systems, including medical gas systems.
  • Responding to operational issues and troubleshooting specialized piping systems.
  • Carrying out work with minimal supervision, including installation and repair of hospital piping and fixtures.
  • Working with vendors to ensure material standards and enhance relationships.

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm EST.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting, working in noisy/confined areas, on slippery surfaces, and long periods of standing or sitting.

Additional Notes: This is a bargaining unit position. Current federal employees must submit SF-50 forms. Veterans\’ preference does not apply under the direct-hire authority but full consideration is given.

Requirements include: U.S. citizenship, background check, drug testing, probation, and registration requirements.

Qualifications: Demonstrated training or experience in piping systems, with ratings based on federal standards. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work.

Note: Full-time work is considered 35-40 hours/week; part-time credited accordingly.

Additional info: No education requirement. Compliance with health and safety protocols, including flu vaccination, is mandatory. Benefits include comprehensive federal employment perks.
