Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Reporting to: Director, Nuclear & Fuel Cycle Engineering
Your Role In The Mission
Type One Energy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Materials Scientist with experience in the characterization, processing, and development of new materials. Ideally the candidate will have experience in the development and testing of materials used within the nuclear or fusion sectors.
As a Materials Scientist, you will play a vital role in the development of material systems which will be deployed on the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant. Notably this includes leading a program aimed at the timely delivery of reduced activation steels for in‑vessel components such as the blanket and first wall. This includes thrusts aimed at manufacturing, scale‑up, and in‑service lifetime evaluation. In addition, this position will support structural materials selection and evaluation for additional systems, including the vacuum vessel and ex‑vessel components.
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis on a variety of materials, including their composition, microstructure, properties, and behavior under different conditions
- Plan and execute fusion relevant environmental testing campaigns for verifying performance of materials and components over their expected in‑service lifetimes.
- Utilize advanced techniques to characterize material properties, including mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties.
- Engage with vendors to develop manufacturing processes that ensure adherence to quality standards for maintaining a strict control over material properties for fusion relevant materials.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate new materials into product development.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to disseminate research findings and contribute to the scientific community.
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians to foster a collaborative environment.
- Collaborate with external partners, including academic institutions and research organizations, to explore potential collaborations and stay at the forefront of materials, fusion, and stellarator technologies.
What You’ll Need
- Strong educational background in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- In-depth knowledge of material properties, processing methods, and characterization techniques, particularly as it pertains to steels (fusion relevant steels preferred).
- Proven hands‑on experience in materials test methods such as thermophysical, mechanical, or microscopy.
- Experience planning and executing radiation experiments and post irradiation examination (PIE).
- Familiarity with computational modelling and simulation tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and propose innovative solutions.
- Attention to detail in experimental work and data analysis.
We Offer
- Stock and share options 📈
- Relocation allowance 💰
- Insurance plans 🩺
- 401k retirement options 💸
- And many more great voluntary benefits 👀
