About the role
We are looking to fill an upcoming vacancy for the position of Vehicle Technician (HGV) within our Operations and Resilience Department in our Technical Services Centre. You will play a vital role in supporting lifesaving operations while we support you in developing specialist skills.

Qualifications & Experience
The successful candidate will be a time‑served and qualified engineer, holding a minimum Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance. They will demonstrate a strong commitment to the TWFRS Values of Safety, Integrity, Inclusivity and Learning, and champion these in day‑to‑day work, as well as the highest standards of ethical behaviour in compliance with our ethical code of conduct.
Responsibilities
- Undertake maintenance of the Service fleet of appliances, light vans, cars and marine craft.
- Carry out fault diagnosis and repairs on any reported defects.
- Prepare vehicles for MOT.
- Carry out all work in a safe manner at all times.
- Attend Stations and other Service locations to carry out maintenance/repairs.
Desired Skills
- Diagnosing and rectifying faults including those present in electrical/electronic systems fitted to modern vehicles and plant.
- Undertaking all types of mechanical repairs including hydraulics, diesel and petrol engines, automatic transmissions, retarders, full air braking systems, ABS and traction control systems.
- Fabricating basic components using a variety of materials, including metal and wood.
- Excellent communication and IT skills.
- Working consistently to deadlines whilst producing good quality work.
About the Department
The Technical Services Centre is a purpose‑built facility on Baltic Road in Gateshead. On site facilities include a staff gym and ample free parking. Technical Services is a modernised central transport, property and equipment maintenance and supply facility. The department co‑ordinates the development and delivery of asset storage and issue, maintenance, evaluation, specification and compliance with all technical, legal and policy standards, facilitating the effective and efficient management of transport and operational equipment assets along with the provision of PPE, fuel and consumables.
