Overview

A large and growing technology organisation is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Development Manager to lead and develop a team of software engineers within its Newcastle technology function. This is not a hands-off management position. We're looking for someone who has built their career as a strong software engineer before progressing into technical and people leadership, retaining the technical depth and credibility to support experienced developers and contribute meaningfully to complex engineering discussions.

You’ll combine people leadership with technical direction, architecture and engineering standards, helping create an environment where developers can perform at their best while continuing to improve the quality, scalability and maintainability of large-scale software platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of software engineers
  • Provide strong technical leadership across the development function
  • Support engineers with complex .NET and architectural challenges
  • Help define technical direction and make pragmatic architecture decisions
  • Drive engineering standards around code quality, testing and maintainability
  • Conduct code and solution reviews and challenge technical decisions where appropriate
  • Work closely with Product Owners, Architects and senior technology stakeholders
  • Improve engineering processes, standards and ways of working
  • Support the delivery of scalable, reliable enterprise software
  • Create an environment where engineers can develop, progress and perform effectively

Requirements

  • Extensive commercial software engineering experience with C# and .NET
  • Strong Microsoft Azure knowledge and cloud development experience
  • Several years of technical leadership or development management experience
  • Proven experience leading, mentoring and developing software engineers
  • Strong understanding of APIs, microservices and distributed systems
  • Experience designing and architecting enterprise software solutions
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server, CI/CD and Azure DevOps
  • Excellent technical communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Previous Development Manager or Engineering Manager experience
  • Strong understanding of SOLID principles and modern design patterns
  • Experience improving engineering standards across multiple teams
  • Experience working within large-scale enterprise technology environments
  • Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Lead Developer or Principal Engineer
