Part-time; 2 shifts per week on alternate weekends. Shift times 10:00 – 18:00 hours.

Qualifications, Training and Experience

  • Previous experience preferred
  • Genuine interest in working with older people
  • Willingness to participate in National Vocational Training Programmes if necessary
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment; follow all home procedures carefully and correctly

Kitchen Duties

  • Prepare hot and cold evening meals in accordance with menus and special requirements, under the supervision of the cook.
  • Prepare all food in an appropriate, hygienic and safe manner.
  • Serve meals appropriate to the service user’s needs.
  • Follow daily routines.
  • Keep all food storage areas clean, tidy and stocked appropriately.
  • Ensure all kitchen utensils and crockery are clean and stored appropriately.
  • Report ordering requirements to the Head Cook to ensure adequate stocks.
  • Keep work surfaces and kitchen areas clean and tidy at all times.
  • Use all food in order of rotation ensuring freshness.
  • Dispose of kitchen waste correctly.
  • Follow all safety rules and ensure the working area is safe.
  • Wear a clean uniform at all times and keep a tidy appearance.
  • Be economical with materials.

General Duties

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and all mandatory training when required.
  • Attend supervision and appraisals, ensuring that you have prepared for these when required.
  • Attend any other training when a need has been identified, and complete online training when allocated.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff, relatives and visitors (including professional agencies) regarding residents.
  • Respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly.
  • Make visitors feel welcome; provide refreshments/assistance as required.
  • Report any faults/defects in the home to the appropriate person or the nurse in charge.
  • Be fully aware of the fire policy and food hygiene regulations.
  • Be familiar with all current policies and procedures; understand your duty to comply and implement them when necessary.
  • Wear uniform provided together with plain black trousers and flat sensible shoes.
  • Be aware of residents’ confidentiality at all times; do not divulge confidential information to third parties.
  • Do not use a personal mobile phone while on duty.
  • Keep all records of cleaning tasks completed after each shift in the appropriate document.
  • Understand your duty to whistleblow if you witness or are informed of safeguarding issues.
  • Wear an identification badge at all times.
  • Promote and ensure the good reputation of the organisation.

Health and Safety

  • Work in a safe environment in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (HSWA).
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by understanding and ensuring adherence to the home’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures, including Fire.
  • Practice and promote safe working practices within the home.
  • Take responsibility for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions.
  • Ensure that all COSHH records are maintained and updated when necessary.
  • Fully comply with infection control policies and procedures and appropriate hand hygiene technique.
  • Report immediately to the person in charge any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a resident, colleague, yourself or another.
  • Report to the manager, maintenance person or nurse in charge any faults, damaged furniture, faulty appliances, equipment or any potential hazard.
  • Clean up any spillages that you have made, found, or when asked to by the nurse in charge.
  • Be aware that the home has adopted a NO SMOKING policy that applies to all posts within the home. Smoking may be carried out in a designated area that can be found to the rear of the building.
