Overview
We are seeking experienced Senior Java Developers to join the COTAX Futures Team within Tax Administration, supporting a major programme focused on the modernisation of HMRC legacy services. You will work within agile Scrum teams alongside Java Engineers, Front End Developers and Quality Engineers to deliver scalable, cloud-native solutions and modern microservices architecture. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a large-scale digital transformation programme operating within a complex, enterprise-level environment. Whilst previous Public Sector experience is desirable, it is not essential. Candidates must demonstrate experience working within large, complex technical environments, ideally within regulated industries such as Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, Utilities, Telecommunications, or similar.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain Java-based microservices and APIs.
- Build and enhance RESTful services using Spring Boot.
- Develop robust, scalable and secure backend solutions.
- Containerise and deploy applications using Kubernetes.
- Write and maintain automated unit tests.
- Collaborate effectively within Agile Scrum teams.
- Support the modernisation of legacy platforms and services.
- Contribute to technical design discussions and architectural decisions.
- Participate in code reviews and uphold engineering best practices.
- Utilise AI-assisted development tools where appropriate to improve analysis, design, development, testing and code quality.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience with Java.
- Extensive experience developing REST APIs using Spring Boot.
- Experience writing unit tests using JUnit.
- Strong understanding of JSON structures and data formats.
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including:
- Containerising applications.
- Deploying and managing microservices.
- Troubleshooting deployments within containerised environments.
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery teams.
- Proven track record delivering solutions within complex enterprise environments.
