Job function

We are engaging an experienced Telecommunications Engineer on a day-rate contract to support fibre network delivery across UK telecom facilities and data centres. Working with tier 1 telecommunications companies, the contractor will provide hands-on expertise in Optical Distribution Frame installation, fibre management, testing, and fault resolution. You will be working with a colleague, as a pair, to deliver high-quality fibre work with minimal supervision.

Engagement Type: Day-rate contractor

Contract Length: Project-based / 1 year+ rolling

Start Date: ASAP or by agreement

Rate: Competitive UK day rate (dependent on experience and scope)

IR35 Status: Inside / Outside to be confirmed per engagement

Specific responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, label, and maintain Optical Distribution Frames (ODF)
  • Carry out fibre routing, patching, and rearrangements within ODF systems
  • Test fibre links using OTDR, power meters, and light sources
  • Identify and rectify fibre faults, losses, and connectivity issues
  • Work from fibre schematics, splice diagrams, and as-built drawings
  • Support network upgrades, migrations, and capacity expansions
  • Ensure work complies with UK telecom standards, site rules, and quality requirements
  • Update fibre schedules, test results, and site documentation

About you

  • Proven experience as a Telecommunications / Fibre Engineer with strong ODF exposure
  • Hands-on experience with fibre splicing, termination, and testing
  • Solid knowledge of single-mode and multi-mode fibre
  • Ability to work independently on a day-rate basis
  • Own PPE and standard hand tools (test equipment project-dependent)
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Willingness to work on-site at UK network facilities

Preferred Experience & Certifications

  • Experience in UK data centres, exchanges, or large-scale fibre networks
  • Exposure to FTTP / FTTH, GPON, DWDM, or core/backbone networks
  • Industry certifications such as BICSI, FOA (CFOT), City & Guilds, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with UK health & safety practices (RAMS, PTW, toolbox talks)

Health, Safety & Compliance

Contractor must comply with UK HSE regulations, site-specific safety rules, and permit-to-work systems. All work to be completed in line with agreed RAMS and project timelines.
