Overview
We are retained by a growing organisation within the UK energy and infrastructure sector to appoint a BESS Technical Manager. This role offers a strong step-up opportunity for Senior Engineers who are ready to take on broader responsibility while continuing to operate as a technical authority. The position provides technical leadership across the delivery and operation of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets, supporting projects from late-stage development through construction, commissioning, and into operation. Alongside this, the role introduces people leadership and stakeholder management responsibilities, with structured support in place.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership (Primary Focus)
- Act as technical lead across BESS projects, ensuring robust system design and delivery
- Review and define technical specifications, system architecture, and performance requirements
- Support procurement activities, including technical evaluations and contractor/OEM selection
- Oversee commissioning, testing, and technical acceptance of BESS assets
- Monitor asset performance, degradation, and availability, implementing optimisation strategies
- Lead fault investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Ensure compliance with grid codes, industry standards, and safety requirements
- People & Capability Development (Supported Step-Up)
- Take responsibility for the technical guidance and development of a small engineering team
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and day-to-day technical direction
- Support workload planning and prioritisation across projects
- Develop leadership, communication, and stakeholder management capability with support from senior management
- Contribute to building a consistent, high-performing technical function
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with project management, construction, asset management, and operations teams
- Interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, DNOs, and consultants
- Support decision-making by translating complex technical issues into clear recommendations
Candidate Profile
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Strong technical experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or grid-connected power assets
- Solid understanding of power systems, power electronics, and electrical infrastructure
- Currently operating at Senior Engineer or Lead Engineer level, or in an early-stage management role
- Comfortable acting as a technical authority and influencing project decisions
- Motivated to develop people leadership and broader management capability
Desirable Experience
- Utility-scale or commercial BESS project exposure
- Familiarity with EMS, PCS, HV/LV systems, transformers, and protection schemes
- Experience working within EPC-led delivery models
- Background in renewable energy, generation, or transmission/distribution environments
