Overview: Mechanical Contracts Manager – Bedford area with a salary of £50,000 - £60,000 per annum plus £4,500 car allowance or company van. Location: Bedford (covering approx. 50-mile radius across Beds, Herts & Bucks). Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:30 - 17:00.

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Contracts Manager to join a specialist building services team based in Bedford. With around 20 employees, the business delivers high-quality mechanical refurbishment and installation projects valued between £10k-£500k (typically £50k-£250k). Projects span the commercial and public sectors, including schools, NHS facilities, and care homes — offering a varied and technically engaging workload.

This role will suit someone with a strong mechanical background within construction, confident in managing HVAC, plumbing, heating, and ventilation packages from design through to completion. Projects are delivered within the commercial sector, including public and private schools, NHS properties, and care homes. You will deal with Labour, Procurement, Estimators, and run an autonomous and self-sufficient position.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage and deliver mechanical refit and refurbishment projects across commercial environments.
  • Lead a team of directly employed mechanical engineers and specialist subcontractors.
  • Oversee procurement, labour allocation, and project delivery to meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Ensure all works comply with current mechanical regulations, H&S, and industry standards.
  • Work closely with clients, consultants, and internal teams to maintain long-term relationships and repeat business.
  • Support the continued growth and development of the mechanical department, identifying opportunities for improvement and expansion.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrable experience managing mechanical projects within construction (typically £50k-£250k).
  • Background in HVAC, heating, plumbing, or mechanical services installation and refurbishment.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • SMSTS (desirable).
  • Full UK driving licence.
