Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join our High Voltage Renewables team. This is a key technical role responsible for delivering high-quality primary electrical and earthing designs for HV and EHV substations and balance of plant (BoP) projects within the renewable energy sector. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the design, coordination, and technical assurance of substation layouts and earthing systems, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and network operators.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the production of primary electrical designs for HV and EHV substations, including AIS and GIS systems up to 132kV.
- Develop earthing designs, including modelling, above-ground layouts, and site-wide earthing philosophies.
- Produce and check electrical layout drawings, including:
- Substation general arrangements
- Cable route layouts and sections
- LV distribution layouts
- Switchroom and control room layouts
- Earthing and bonding layouts
- Site-wide ducting and cabling routes
- Work as part of the wider electrical design team to deliver coordinated design outputs in line with programme and quality requirements.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant British, IEC, and utility standards, client specifications, and project requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and designers within the team.
- Support tendering activities, feasibility studies, and concept design development.
- Review and approve third-party design submissions and contractor documentation where required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
- Proven experience working within a consultancy, contractor, or utility environment in the power or renewables sector.
- Demonstrable experience in the primary electrical design of HV/EHV AC substations and BoP projects, typically from 11kV to 132kV.
- Strong understanding of HV and EHV substation installation practices, specifications, and industry standards.
- Experience providing technical leadership or management of a specialist design team.
- Competent in interpreting and producing engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with earthing design software and modelling tools (e.g. CDEGS or similar) is desirable.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Role-Specific Requirements
- Proficient in producing substation layout drawings for:
- 11kV & 22kV distribution networks
- 33kV switchrooms and control rooms
- 66kV & 132kV AIS substations
- 132kV GIS substations
- EPC / BoP site layouts
- Produce above-ground earthing layouts, including equipment bonding and structural connections.
- Develop site-wide ducting, trenching, and cabling layouts aligned with civil.
