This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging projects, contribute throughout the full software development lifecycle and collaborate with talented engineers to develop secure, high-quality solutions.

About TwinStream

Founded in 2019 by engineers tackling complex challenges within government organisations, TwinStream combines technical excellence with outstanding client service. We've grown to more than 100 people across the UK, delivering innovative solutions in a collaborative and supportive environment.

The Java Software Engineer Role

You'll be involved in everything from understanding requirements and designing solutions to coding, testing, deployment and ongoing support. We're looking for more than someone who can write code—you'll bring curiosity, strong problem-solving skills and a genuine interest in understanding the challenges behind the technology.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining high-quality Java software.
  • Investigating technologies and identifying effective technical solutions.
  • Writing and maintaining unit, acceptance and performance tests.
  • Supporting deployment pipelines and working closely with DevOps specialists.
  • Troubleshooting complex technical issues and providing third-line support.
  • Participating in code reviews, pair programming, planning and estimation.
  • Working collaboratively within an agile team to deliver reliable, maintainable software.

What We're Looking For

You'll have strong Java development experience, an agile mindset and a passion for solving complex technical problems.

Key skills and experience:

  • Java development, ideally using Spring Boot.
  • Agile practices, including TDD, BDD, continuous delivery, DevOps and pair programming.
  • Experience with AWS services, including S3, Fargate, Lambda, SQS and SNS.
  • Databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB or DynamoDB, plus JPA.
  • REST APIs, RabbitMQ, Docker and Linux.
  • Infrastructure and automation tools, including Terraform, Ansible and Kubernetes.
  • CI/CD and version control tools such as Jenkins, Git, Bitbucket and GitLab.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, with a positive and open approach to teamwork.

Desirable: Experience with OpenShift, Docker Compose/Swarm, Python or other languages such as JavaScript, Go and Bash.

You don't need experience with every technology listed. If you have solid Java skills and enjoy learning, collaborating and tackling challenging engineering problems, we'd love to hear from you.

What's in It for You?

  • £70,000–£90,000 salary
  • Fully remote working, with potential travel to the Bristol office in the future
  • The opportunity to work on technically challenging and meaningful projects
  • A collaborative team environment focused on technical excellence
  • The chance to develop your skills while contributing across the full software development lifecycle
