The Shift Engineering Team Leader is responsible for overseeing and developing a team of engineers to ensure seamless operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment and machinery. The role requires direction, technical skills, and a focus on safety and quality. One week you will work 6am to 2pm and the next 2pm to 10pm, Mon-Fri. Please note this is a 12 months, fixed‑term contract.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise, mentor, and motivate a team of cross‑trade maintenance shift engineers (4–7 direct reports), ensuring a high level of teamwork and productivity.
- Oversee and prioritise daily engineering works, ensuring that all tasks are completed on time and in accordance with company standards.
- Represent engineering department during daily stakeholder review and engagement sessions, acting as a primary point of contact for Operations‑Engineering alignment.
- Identify and provide ongoing development opportunities for team members, whilst assisting in coaching new engineers and technical operators.
- Function as a lead facilitator for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and problem‑solving exercises involving cross‑functional teams.
- Review major downtime losses and repeat failures through data‑driven analysis to identify root cause and implement preventive measures.
- Champion and facilitate continuous improvement projects using mean manufacturing methodology.
- Facilitate shift handovers to ensure seamless transition of information and optimise floor management systems to maximise efficiency.
- Champion compliance of safety regulations, Quality standards and company policies.
- Identify and participate in small capital projects, whilst supporting the project engineers on complex projects.
- Apprentice trained engineer within engineering/manufacturing environment.
- C&G/NVQ3 in engineering discipline.
- Experience with supervising and developing a multi‑discipline engineering team.
- Experience in lean manufacturing and root cause analysis techniques.
- Innate directing capability.
- Sound analytical skills.
- Effective communication skills both verbal and written.
- Good interpersonal skills, able to evaluate and pass on knowledge.
- Good organisational ability, able to prioritise.
- Ability to read and understand safety information, technical manuals and data.
- Natural critical thinking skills.
- Initiative‑taking, flexible and able to respond to emergencies when required.
- Works well in a team, managing tight deadlines.
