The Cost Engineer is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of cost control activities across assigned work packages. This includes tracking actual costs, forecasting outturns, managing budget changes, and supporting performance reporting. The role works closely with delivery teams, planners, and commercial colleagues to ensure accurate and timely cost data is available to support decision‑making. The Cost Engineer also contributes to the development of cost management tools and processes with the support of the Senior Cost Manager and Cost Management Lead.
Day to day duties:
- Contribute to the allocation and monitoring of budgets across the Work Breakdown Structure
- Maintain records of budget changes and approvals
- Capture actual costs from delivery teams and supply chain partners
- Analyse cost data to identify trends and variances
- Support cost control activities, including tracking against budget and identifying potential overruns
- Assist in preparing cost forecasts and reporting out‑turn expectations
- Support contract administration activities, including validation of applications for payment
- Maintain records of commercial transactions and support audit readiness
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Finance, or a related field
- Professional accreditation (e.g., AACE, RICS) is desirable
- Understanding of cost engineering principles and project controls
- Experience working with cost tracking and reporting tools
- Strong analytical and numerical skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi‑disciplinary team
- Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting processes
- Awareness of commercial and contractual principles is desirable
- Experience or desire to work within a major complex infrastructure programme
