As a Smart Buildings Principal Consultant with a sustainability focus, you will support clients in validating base build systems and ensuring compliance with sustainability and wellness standards. You will play a key role in integrating smart technologies that enhance environmental performance, occupant well-being, and operational efficiency, while aligning with frameworks such as WELL Building Standard, NABERS, and BREEAM. This role involves working closely with design teams, contractors, and technology vendors to ensure digital enablement and sustainability objectives are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Sustainability & Compliance Leadership: Validate base build systems against client sustainability vision and WELL, NABERS, and BREEAM requirements. Ensure smart building strategies align with net-zero carbon goals and ESG commitments. Support development of digital principles and governance frameworks that incorporate sustainability best practices.
- Technology & Environmental Integration: Guide integration of smart technologies that improve energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and occupant comfort. Collaborate with design teams to ensure systems support WELL features (lighting, thermal comfort, air quality monitoring). Confirm preferred sensor suppliers for environmental monitoring and ensure blueprint is complete and implementable in new offices.
- Performance Validation & Reporting: Conduct technical reviews to ensure systems meet NABERS and BREEAM performance benchmarks. Develop dashboards and analytics for real-time monitoring of sustainability KPIs. Provide governance and reporting structures for compliance tracking.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate workshops to align sustainability objectives with technology solutions. Act as the primary interface between clients, sustainability consultants, and technology vendors.
- Project Delivery: Deliver projects in line with RIBA stages, embedding sustainability and wellness principles throughout. Ensure architecture and standards are validated by sustainability and technology teams.

- Degree in Engineering, Sustainability, or related discipline.
- Project Management qualification (APM, Agile, Prince2) or similar.
- SmartScore and WiredScore Accredited Professional.
- Knowledge of WELL, NABERS, and BREEAM frameworks.
Skills & Experience
- Experience in smart building consultancy with sustainability integration.
- Excellent knowledge of RIBA plan of works.
- Excellent knowledge of building systems.
- Strong understanding of environmental performance metrics and certification processes.
- Familiarity with IoT solutions for energy and wellness monitoring.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience with WELL preconditions and optimisations.
