Responsibilities

  • Undertake independent review of fire engineering designs to ensure alignment with project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Provide assurance on both fissile and non-fissile project designs, identifying risks, gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Review fire strategies, calculations, and supporting documentation as part of the design assurance process.
  • Apply a risk‑proportionate approach to design review, ensuring solutions are practical, compliant and aligned with project constraints.
  • Support project teams in resolving technical fire safety issues and implementing appropriate mitigation strategies.

Technical Oversight and Advisory

  • Provide expert technical input on fire engineering matters across project lifecycle stages.
  • Advise on compliance with relevant legislation, standards and best practice guidance.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams in integrating fire safety requirements into overall design solutions.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure fire safety considerations are clearly understood and appropriately implemented.

Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting

  • Liaise with internal teams, clients and external stakeholders to communicate fire safety risks and design considerations.
  • Produce clear, concise technical reports outlining findings, recommendations and required actions.
  • Contribute to project reviews, technical workshops and assurance processes.

Qualifications

  • Level 5 Diploma (or equivalent) in fire engineering.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. Institute of Fire Engineers).
  • Ability to review and interpret fire engineering designs and technical documentation.
  • In‑depth knowledge of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Approved Document B, and BS 9999.
  • Familiarity with relevant Eurocodes, British Standards, Codes of Practice and guidance documents.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to adopt a risk‑proportionate and pragmatic approach to fire safety challenges.
  • Proven ability to influence and engage across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Degree in Fire Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Site Licence Conditions and associated regulatory frameworks.
  • Wider experience in fire engineering in commercial, industrial and residential premises.

SOX control responsibilities may be part of this role, which are to be adhered to where applicable.
