I’m currently working with a well-established and highly respected independent consultancy in the built environment sector that is looking to appoint an experienced CDM Principal Designer to join their team in the North West. This is a fantastic opportunity for a confident H&S professional who enjoys taking ownership, influencing design teams, and playing a key role in delivering safe, compliant, and well-managed projects across the residential sector (with exposure to other sectors such as heritage, education and leisure).
The Role
You’ll support multiple project teams in meeting their CDM and wider health & safety obligations, while also leading on CDM-focused projects. The position blends technical expertise, client-facing work, and team collaboration. You will be involved from early design stages through to project completion, helping to identify hazards, reduce risk, and champion high standards in health, safety, environmental and quality performance.
Key Responsibilities of the CDM Principal Designer
- Preparing Pre-Construction Information and Construction Phase Plans
- Submitting F10 notifications
- Producing Designer Risk Assessments and maintaining Design Risk Registers
- Attending and contributing to Design Team Meetings, advising on risk reduction
- Carrying out CDM site audits and attending progress meetings
- Compiling Health & Safety Files for client handover
- Advising clients, designers, and contractors on best practice in health & safety, both during design and construction, and for future maintenance
- Supporting and promoting HSEQ and ISO standards across projects
About the CDM Principal Designer
- IOSH or APS membership is desirable
- NEBOSH Construction (or similar) – additional specialisms such as fire or building safety are advantageous
- Strong experience in the residential sector (other sectors also welcomed)
- Proven experience acting as a CDM Principal Designer or CDM Advisor
- Confidence to lead meetings and appropriately challenge duty holders on H&S matters
- The ability to manage their own workload while contributing to a wider team
- Good commercial awareness and a practical, solutions-focused mindset
