Salary: Up to £90,000 + benefits

Turner Lovell is recruiting a Project Design Manager for a leading UK energy infrastructure contractor delivering Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and renewable energy connection projects across the UK.

This role focuses on end-to-end design ownership across BESS projects, including Civils, HV Cables, and Protection & Control. You will be responsible for coordinating all design deliverables, ensuring solutions are technically compliant, constructable, and aligned with client and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own and lead multidisciplinary design for BESS and grid connection projects from feasibility through detailed design and construction support.
  • Manage and coordinate electrical and civil design teams, including internal designers and external consultants.
  • Ensure full compliance with DNO standards, industry codes, CDM 2015, and internal design governance requirements.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with clients, confidently challenging requirements where necessary to achieve safe, efficient, and compliant solutions.
  • Manage design programme, workload prioritisation, and technical risk across multiple projects.
  • Provide technical support during construction, responding to site queries and resolving design issues as required.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
  • Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Proven experience leading design for BESS or renewable energy grid connection projects.
  • Strong background in substation-based infrastructure projects within the regulated DNO environment (11kV-132kV).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Strong technical authority with the confidence to engage and challenge clients under delivery pressure.
  • Ability to understand and manage the interaction between civils, cables, and protection & control disciplines.
