Position: Permanent or Freelance

My client is an international engineering firm with teams and projects across the UK and Europe. They supply HV control & protection products alongside electrical design, HV engineering and installation services to the leading electricity TSOs and DNOs across the UK. As a result of growth and recent framework wins, they are currently increasing the size of their team. We are seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer, specializing in protection settings and schemes. This role focuses on developing and implementing protection solutions for transmission and distribution networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and calculate protection settings for transmission and distribution equipment
  • Create and verify protection setting schedules using industry-standard software
  • Perform protection coordination studies and fault level calculations
  • Develop innovative protection schemes and associated documentation
  • Review and optimize existing protection arrangements
  • Create technical specifications for protection systems
  • Produce detailed design documentation including:
  • Protection setting calculations
  • Scheme logic diagrams
  • Setting schedules
  • Technical reports
  • Support FAT/SAT testing activities
  • Provide technical expertise for complex protection arrangements
  • Assess and optimize delivery processes for protection settings projects
  • Ensure compliance with latest industry standards and policies
  • Support sales and operations teams with technical expertise
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
  • Required Qualifications & Experience

    • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering
    • Extensive experience in protection setting calculations
    • Proficiency in protection coordination software (e.g., ETAP)
    • Experience with major manufacturer relay systems
    • Strong understanding of power system protection principles
    • Knowledge of National Grid technical specifications and standards
