Turner Lovell is partnering with a rapidly expanding specialist contractor operating within the UK high-voltage transmission sector. With a strong secured pipeline of National Grid substation works, they are now seeking an experienced M&E Site Supervisor with proven capability across GIS installations and SF6 gas systems.

This position offers the chance to join a business in a clear growth phase, delivering complex substation upgrades and new build works across critical UK energy infrastructure.

The successful individual will oversee mechanical and electrical site activities within HV substations, supporting delivery through installation, maintenance, refurbishment, and commissioning stages. A solid understanding of GIS equipment and SF6 handling procedures is a key requirement for this role.

A strong balance of electrical and mechanical site supervision experience within high-voltage environments is essential, alongside a clear understanding of compliance, safety, and environmental responsibilities associated with SF6 systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead M&E site supervision across HV substation projects throughout the UK
  • Coordinate daily site operations, including direct labour, subcontractors, and specialist engineering teams
  • Oversee installation, servicing, and refurbishment works on Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
  • Manage and supervise all SF6 gas-related activities, including:
    • Gas transfer, filling, and recovery operations
    • Leak identification, reporting, and corrective actions
    • Routine gas testing, condition monitoring, and compliance verification
  • Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with National Grid procedures, permits, and operational standards
  • Maintain strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations, with particular focus on SF6 control
  • Work closely with client representatives, HSE teams, engineers, and commissioning personnel on site
  • Track and report on site progress, productivity, and quality outputs to senior management
  • Maintain accurate site records, including SF6 handling data and inspection results
  • Assist in outage coordination, planning activities, and multi-discipline site delivery
  • Promote and enforce high standards of safety, quality, and environmental performance across all site operations

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience supervising UK high-voltage substation projects
  • Strong capability across both electrical and mechanical site supervision
  • Practical experience working with GIS systems and SF6 gas handling
  • Sound understanding of F-Gas legislation and environmental compliance obligations
  • Background within National Grid or comparable transmission environments
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation
  • Proven leadership experience managing multiple site teams and subcontractors
  • Strong working knowledge of HSE regulations and HV safe systems of work
  • Recognised site qualifications (SMSTS / SSSTS / CSCS / Safety Passport or equivalent)
  • National Grid authorisation or eligibility to achieve authorisation
