The Permit and Compliance Manager will be experienced and competent in managing a scientific reporting and analytical function, leading on delivery of the environmental standards for the client. They will promote robust and sustainable practices and ensure compliance with environmental regulation through a range of planned measures, guidance and onsite activities which focus on continuous improvement. They will manage the SZC abstraction licence conditions and adherence to the Industrial Emissions Directive for on site construction activities, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, supporting clients with their own auditing processes wherever required. This role is pivotal in ensuring our clients meet their environmental licence conditions and the company's contract goals, while supporting the continued growth of the business. Analysing, trending, and reporting of routine and compliance sample results and data to ensure environmental compliance with EA permits and standards (EQS limits) are met, and information returned to EDF (NNB – the Client) as required.

What you'll do

  • To ensure compliance with the conditions of the abstraction licence and the associated work instruction for the Sizewell C construction site.
  • To ensure compliance with the licence requirements on abstracted flow, water use in line with consented purpose and adherence to the ‘hands-off’ flow conditions.
  • To ensure provision by the site operatives of timely and accurate daily samples from the abstraction points at prescribed times.
  • Ensure provision of monthly samples by the site operatives for the abstraction sites and encompassing all required water quality, bathing water quality and cement grade quality samples to BS EN 1008:2002 as prescribed by the SZC Client.
  • Ensure contract prescribed checks of the Leiston drain crossing and Aldhurst farm weir are completed both accurately and at the prescribed frequency.
  • To ensure the daily sample data is accurately transferred to the Water Abstraction Tracker for the Client to submit to the Environment Agency.
  • To ensure compliance with the recording of abstracted volume from the telemetry system by the site operatives and provide daily notifications to SZC Site Operations team.
  • To effectively monitor the quality of the site discharges for the purpose of protecting public safety, ensuring environmental compliance and as a result protect the business from financial penalty for breaches of standards.
  • Manage the compliance and assurance required for operating generators at Sizewell C in accordance with the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).
  • Work closely with the SZC Client to liaise with the EA on the preparation, attendance and follow up to EA site inspections and recommendations.
  • Follow health and safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment to comply with Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Capture and formulate information related to the surface water and dewatering networks in association with the Environmental Analyst, to ensure comply with UK regulations.
  • Critically evaluate scientific data and accurately report results onto within agreed timescales in order to satisfy the EA Regulators and our customers, as per our contractual agreements (Science Team KPI's).
  • Work within the framework of the Quality Policy following strict guidelines covering technique, process, and reporting, including accurate record keeping. This ensures compliance with ISO17025 standards in order to maintain accreditation with UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).
  • Complete POWRAs and Vehicle checks as and when required.
  • Raise Insights for data or compliance issues and work with operational teams to investigate problems, raise work order requests and close out Insight actions.
  • Regular liaison with laboratories on result certificates and any investigations of results and third-party contractors.
  • Undertake data downloads and use of telemetry systems to collect and process raw data for groundwater and surface water data.
  • Review and update the Turnbull Sampling Procedure and Water and Sediment Management Plan as and when required.
  • Create or update internal scientific analyst guides to help document best practice and ensure team resilience.
  • Lead on the Permit to pump authorisation and registration to ensure water quality on-site.
  • Produce Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Reports for the Client and meet the Clients deadlines.
  • Work with the Environmental Technician and Process Technicians to ensure asset Management Checks and maintenance are delivered e.g. GWPS data wipe, WMZ logger change of batteries.
  • Conduct analysis of groundwater data and surface water sample results.

What you'll need

  • Expect educated to Undergraduate degree in a scientific subject.
  • Advanced computing skills (MS office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience relevant to the water industry, environmental management, geology or chemistry would be beneficial (e.g. familiar with laboratory techniques and equipment, including maintenance).
  • Practical, methodical, and able to follow detailed written instructions with attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory Quality Control and understanding of the principles of the Quality Policy.
  • Able to work as a team or independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to integrate into a team quickly and build working relationships and liaise with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Able to work in a busy site environment and operate flexibly.
  • Able to prioritise and plan workload.
