Our client, based in Westhill, is looking for an experienced DNO Mechanical Fitter to join their team on a permanent staff basis. This role involves working across Scotland on high-voltage substation projects and maintenance activities. The DNO (Distribution Network Operator) Mechanical Fitter is responsible for the installation, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of high-voltage (HV) substation plant and equipment. The role requires working outdoors on live distribution networks to help ensure the safe and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out installation, maintenance, strip-down, overhaul, and repair of HV substation equipment including:
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Circuit breakers
    • Ancillary plant and apparatus
  • Perform mechanical fault finding, diagnostics, and condition monitoring activities.
  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on heavy industrial equipment.
  • Work in full compliance with:
    • ESQCR regulations
    • DNO safety rules
    • Company health & safety procedures
  • Complete and manage safety documentation where required.
  • Support and supervise work parties on site.
  • Carry out network switching procedures where authorised.
  • Maintain associated substation infrastructure including:
    • Earthing systems
    • Structural steelwork
    • DC battery banks
  • Travel to sites throughout Scotland as required.

Requirements

  • Recognised apprenticeship or NVQ / City & Guilds Level 3 qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven experience in an industrial mechanical fitting role.
  • Strong background in:
    • Mechanical fault finding
    • Equipment strip-down and rebuild
    • Heavy industrial plant maintenance
  • Previous experience working within HV substations or utility environments is highly desirable.
  • Prior authorisation on DNO/IDNO networks such as:
    • SPEN
    • SSE
    • UKPN
    • National Grid would be advantageous.
  • Full UK Driving Licence essential.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge of HV substation operations and maintenance practices.
  • Understanding of electrical safety regulations and safe systems of work.
