About Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery: Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle (trading as “Tullie”) is a museum, art gallery and community hub. We’ve been part of Carlisle life since 1893. We’ve even been referred to as “Carlisle’s first learning centre”. Before the city had a university, Tullie gave Carlisle a museum, library, art school and technical school. Tullie is being transformed via a series of major projects into a modern, dynamic new cultural experience aimed at showcasing more of the museum’s historic collections, providing more community engagement opportunities and attracting more visitors. Phase 2 of ‘Project Tullie’ opened to great critical acclaim in April, and we are now delivering Phase 3.
Role Overview: We are seeking an inspiring and commercially minded Commercial Operations Manager to join our team. This is a key role that will shape how visitors experience Tullie, driving operational excellence and income growth across our visitor experience, retail, and catering teams. You’ll lead and motivate a large front‑of‑house team to deliver exceptional service every day, ensuring all our spaces are welcoming, safe, and inclusive. You’ll oversee our retail and catering operations, using your commercial insight to grow income and strengthen performance. From analysing key KPIs and developing new commercial opportunities, to maintaining high standards of visitor care, this is a role where creativity, leadership and strategic thinking come together. As part of our management team, you’ll play an active role in shaping Tullie’s future — influencing how we deliver our visitor experience, supporting sustainability goals, and contributing to exciting projects that will redefine our museum over the next decade. If you’re passionate about culture, people and performance and thrive in a fast‑paced, visitor‑focused environment, we’d love to hear from you.
Application Process: If you are inspired by the role and would like to apply for the position, please send your CV and a covering statement (of no more than 500 words), detailing any relevant experience and knowledge, and what interests you about this role to hr@tulliehouse.org by Friday 5th December 2025. We’ll be reviewing applications as they come in and may appoint before the closing date, so we encourage early applications. If you have any further questions, please contact HR or Head of Commercial and Operations, Katie Mitchell on katie.mitchell@tullie.org.uk.
