An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Shift Trading Manager in the Trading Team (GB). The Shift Trading Manager will supervise the day-to-day operations of the trading desk, ensuring that trading activities are executed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. This role provides immediate operational management to the trading team during shifts, manages workflow, monitors risk adherence, and acts as the first point of escalation for trading issues. The Shift Trading Manager will also support recruitment, onboarding, and performance management for the trading team under the direction of the Trading Manager (GB).
Key Responsibilities
- Overseeing daily trading desk operations, ensuring all transactions are executed with accuracy, compliance, and alignment to agreed strategies and risk frameworks.
- Directing the shift team in optimising portfolio dispatch across wholesale and balancing markets, with particular focus on managing elevated technical and market risk.
- Leading and developing the shift trading team by providing clear guidance, monitoring performance, and resolving operational challenges in real time.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, trading guidelines, and internal processes during all trading shifts.
- Supporting recruitment by conducting initial candidate assessments, assisting with onboarding, and contributing to trader training and development.
- Monitoring and reporting on team performance against operational KPIs and shift objectives, highlighting key risks and opportunities.
- Acting as the first point of escalation for operational, market, or system issues and co-ordinating effective resolution under pressure.
- Maintaining proactive communication with the Trading Manager and Senior Traders, ensuring alignment on market strategy, shift performance and emerging risks.
- Supporting the development and production of reporting mechanisms and board packs.
- Driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance trading processes, tools, and workflows.
- Fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and operational discipline within the trading team.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Solid understanding of short-term GB power and gas market operations, including intraday and day-ahead trading.
- Working knowledge of trading platforms, position management tools, and operational reporting systems.
- In depth understanding of regulatory requirements, compliance standards, and risk management frameworks within energy trading.
- Demonstrated track record in an energy trading environment, preferably with exposure to intraday or short-term markets.
- Experience leading, supervising or mentoring a trading or operations team.
- Practical involvement in delivering day-to-day trading activities and resolving operational challenges.
- Familiarity with recruiting and onboarding trading team members, including initial candidate screening.
- Exposure to pricing commercial contracts such as ancillary services.
- Experience with automation, algorithmic trading or BESS optimisation (desirable).
