An opportunity has arisen to recruit an Assistant Shift Team Leader to join the Operations department at Ballylumford Power Station. This role will support the Shift Team Leader in the co‑ordination, management and operation of all production activities associated with Ballylumford plant and apparatus, ensuring the safe, efficient and profitable operation of the plant to achieve company objectives and business targets. The Assistant Shift Team Leader will also deputise and perform the full delegated role of Shift Team Leader in their absence, including acting as incident controller as required on the EP Ballylumford site in order to mitigate health, safety, environmental and welfare impacts, by having complete operational responsibility for station assets outside of normal hours to meet statutory and contractual obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing the operation of the plant, in conjunction with the Shift Team Leader, according to procedures and standing instructions to ensure plant is optimised and resources are utilised effectively.
- Performing duties as a Control Person and Senior Authorised Person in the operation of the Safety Document System including plant and HV Apparatus in Substations at voltage levels up to 275KV, whilst undertaking the training and assessment of team members in the operation of the Safety Document System.
- Providing effective leadership to develop a dynamic and proactive culture, ensure good staff relationships, constructive team working and a flexible approach to work.
- Assisting and promoting the training and development of individuals as part of a staff development programme.
- Promoting safety as the shift's highest priority and ensure compliance with safety and environmental procedures and ensure all practices meet relevant standards.
- Establishing and upholding an appropriate standard of conduct through leading by example, particularly in areas of safety, environment, timekeeping, and behaviour.
- Ensuring that the operation of the plant is carried out safely and efficiently to meet customer and external agencies expectations and to optimise the cost of production.
- Being conversant with Incident Response Procedures required for the multiple scenarios possible across the site and capable of adopting the role of Incident Controller in such situations.
- Facilitating the start‑up and shut‑down of units in accordance with grid requirements including pre‑start preparation, synchronisation, output control, reconfiguration, unloading and shut‑down.
- Identifying operating problems and instigating remedial action, ensuring actions are recorded and relevant personnel informed.
- Fulfilling all line management responsibilities, in the absence of the Shift Team Leader, to lead and manage the shift team and ensure effective communication with all other departments by attending meetings as necessary (e.g. morning planning meeting, trading call and outage meetings).
- Ensuring adherence to dispatch instructions within acceptable tolerance bands and prompt and accurate redeclaration of plant in accordance with contractual requirements through diligent monitoring of plant operation and ambient conditions.
- Communicating all changes on the plant to their relief at shift change‑over and populate station log as required.
- Devising and implementing isolation schemes for emergency, routine and breakdown work scopes and contribute to the minor and major overhaul planning by implementing necessary methods of isolation.
- Ensuring that all operational routine instructions are completed within the identified time scales and the relevant information is recorded and logged with appropriate work orders closed.
- Reviewing and updating operation procedures and any other associated documents (e.g. training materials) and uploading to document management system.
- Developing and implementing improvements or modified techniques and processes that will improve plant performance.
- Gathering, analysing and interpreting plant performance data and implement changes to maintain or improve operational efficiency.
- Leading on, or assisting with, long or short‑term projects for the team, department or station benefit and adopting the most suitable working pattern to facilitate this.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Background
- Considerable experience of plant operation and / or maintenance – essential.
- Knowledge of operational philosophies, policies, procedures, instructions and legal obligations – essential.
- Knowledge of Safety Document System and capability of operating at the Control Person and Senior Authorised Person for Plant and Apparatus up to 275KV level within the systems – essential.
- Passionate about HSE with a good understanding of Company HSE policies – essential.
- Previous management or supervisory experience – desirable.

Qualifications
- Third level qualification (e.g. HNC, HND in a relevant engineering discipline or, alternatively, extensive demonstrable relevant experience – essential.
- NEBOSH/IOSH – desirable.
