This role is primarily responsible for leading, designing and delivering power solution projects. The role involves provision of the design, documentation and technical reports required to fulfil the design objectives consistent with the requirements and standards as set out in the customer’s specification. The end-user platforms for these solutions reside in the aerospace, land and maritime sectors, and as such, reliability and product safety will play a prominent role. The role is also responsible for the mentoring of junior / senior engineers as well as assisting the Head of Engineering in leading & developing new business opportunities. This role will be based in Nottingham.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical ownership of development of allocated power conversion and power management products and technologies.
- Lead and develop new business opportunities with the Head of Engineering.
- Coaching and mentoring of junior staff.
- Review customer specifications to establish feasibility and possible conceptual solutions.
- Identification and development of new technologies to improve products.
- Determine optimal power converter topologies and product overall electrical design, including product compliance with electrical requirements.
- Develop, review and approve the electrical sections of proposals, including time/cost estimation of tasks and hardware.
- Ownership of compliance matrix responses relating to electrical and electromagnetic compatibility in the final product.
- Develop and maintain mathematical models and simulations of electrical power converters.
- Write, review and approve simulation output reports and schematic drawings.
- Create, review and approve electrical design schematics and PCB layouts (using Altium Designer).
- Prepare design reviews of electrical aspects of our products, including the creation of data packs/presentations.
- Liaison with internal functions and suppliers in purchase of materials & components required on projects.
- Technical ownership of product integrity and performance.
- Develop test plans and procedures for design assurance testing and qualification testing.
- Support and lead electrical testing during development process.
- Review and interpret test results.
- Lead investigations relating to power product failures; collecting, analysing, and summarising information and trends associated with any such failures where necessary.
- Involvement in safety analysis tasks such as FMEA and FMECA.
- Continued personal, professional and technical development to maintain up-to-date knowledge in the domain.
- Recording and analysis of product failures/faults.
- Develop good working relationships with customers, suppliers and academic partners.
- Improve working practices and processes relevant to role.
- Protect our product and company reputation by complying with all relevant regulations and standards.
- May provide line management for small functional and/or project teams.
Core Requirements
- Relevant power converter and / or power management design experience.
- Good knowledge of multiple topologies and understanding of selection criteria.
- Schematic Capture Experience.
- Demonstrable understanding of at least two of the following schemes: DC/DC Converters, AC/DC Supplies, AC/AC Converters, DC/AC Inverters, 3 phase Motor Control Inverters.
- Production level Military, Automotive or Aerospace PCB design experience (Altium Designer experience preferred).
- Understanding of EMC Best Practice.
- Clear and Concise Communicator of Technical Information.
- Awareness of Power Quality Standards such as MIL-STD-704F, DO-160G and BS 3G100.
- Awareness of Environmental Qualification Standards such as MIL-STD-810G.
- Understanding of production processes used in power electronics.
- Higher National Diploma or Degree in Electronics or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
- Be eligible for security clearance to the required level.
- Have previous experience of working in an engineering business.
- Have previous experience in designing power and control products detailed in the knowledge section.
- Awareness of concept development and requirements capture.
- Experience of technical document preparation including hardware description documents, test strategies and procedures.
- Experience of the product development lifecycle from ‘cradle to grave’.
- Have a high level of self-motivation and an ability to work autonomously without high levels of supervision.
- Excellent Communication skills, able (and willing) to articulate ideas and plans clearly to personnel at all levels within the organisation.
- Excellent listening skills and the ability to consider the diverse views of others.

- DOORS Requirements Capture/Tracking Tool Experience.
- VHDL experience (Top Level).
- Quality Engineering/Processes.
- Awareness of Defence and Military Standards processes such as DO-254.
- Experience of having worked on grant funded R&D projects.
- Familiarity with safety critical software development and the programming of FPGAs.
