Gate & Barrier Engineer | Leeds, Sheffield & Surrounding Areas

We are recruiting for an experienced Gate & Barrier Engineer to join a growing engineering team specialising in the installation, service, maintenance, repair and commissioning of automatic gates, barriers, blockers, turnstiles and associated access control systems.

This is a varied, hands-on role working across customer sites throughout Leeds, Sheffield and the surrounding areas.

The successful candidate will benefit from excellent overtime opportunities, ongoing training and development, and the opportunity to work on a wide range of specialist security and access control systems.

The Role

As a Gate & Barrier Engineer, you will be responsible for

  • Installation of automatic gates, barriers, blockers and turnstiles.
  • Servicing, maintenance and repair of existing systems.
  • Fault finding and commissioning of equipment.
  • Conducting site surveys and producing detailed reports.
  • Completing electronic service documentation accurately.
  • Providing a high level of customer service on client sites.
  • Participating in a 24/7 out-of-hours call-out rota.
  • Working safely in outdoor environments and in all weather conditions.
  • The Successful Applicant Will Have
  • Time-served electrical, controls or mechanical apprenticeship, or previous field engineering experience.
  • Experience of installation, fault finding, repairs and commissioning.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A positive attitude and a desire to learn new skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to conduct site surveys and compile detailed reports.
  • The Applicant Must
  • Be able to pass security clearance checks.
  • Have a flexible and positive approach to work.
  • Be available to attend out-of-hours call-outs as part of a rota.

Desirable Experience

  • 18th Edition electrical qualification.
  • 3-phase electrical and 24V AC/DC controls experience.
  • PLC controls knowledge.
  • Mechanical engineering experience.
  • Hydraulic, pneumatic or fluid system experience.
  • Welding qualifications or experience.
  • ECS, CSCS, CCNSG, SSSTS or SMSTS certification.
  • Previous experience with gates, barriers, blockers or turnstiles.
  • Health and Safety qualifications.
  • Salary & Benefits
  • Up to £19.23 per hour
  • 40-hour week, paid door-to-door.
  • Uncapped overtime structure.
  • Overtime paid at time and a third Monday to Friday after 40 hours and for the first 4 hours on Saturday.
  • Overtime paid at double time before 6am Monday to Saturday, after the first 4 hours on Saturday, Sundays, bank holidays and scheduled evening works between 10pm and 6am.
  • Standby payment of £120 per week when on call. (1in4)
  • Call-out bonuses: £25 Monday Thursday, £35 Friday Sunday, £50 on bank holidays.
  • 22 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays.
  • An additional 3 days annual leave after 2 years of service.
  • NEST pension scheme (8% total contribution).
  • Company vehicle for business use.
  • Fuel card provided.
  • Uniform, PPE, mobile phone and tools supplied.
  • Working Pattern
  • Predominantly Monday to Friday daytime hours.
  • Regular overtime available.
  • Weekend and occasional night working required.
  • Call-out rota participation required.
  • Additional Information
  • Occasional travel and staying away from home may be required depending on business needs.
  • Some foreign travel may be available but is not compulsory.
  • Drivers licence checks will be carried out during the final interview stage.
  • The role is primarily outdoor based.
  • This is a varied and interesting position suited to someone who enjoysa hands-on engineering environment.
