Are you an experienced engineer or technical professional who has moved away from the tools and is now looking for the next step in your career? Perhaps you've progressed into a Senior Engineer, Supervisor, Service Coordinator or technical office-based role, but want more responsibility, greater earning potential and the opportunity to have a real impact on the growth of a business. Or maybe you've moved into an office-based position and miss the technical side of the industry. This could be a great opportunity for you.

We are looking for a Repairs & Service Manager to join a growing business based in Crawley, West Sussex, combining technical management, customer relationships, repairs and business development. You'll lead a small Repairs team of 3 people, manage key customer relationships and larger repair projects, while also being responsible for identifying and winning new business opportunities. Importantly, you don't need to be a traditional salesperson. We are looking for someone with a genuine technical understanding who can speak confidently with customers, identify opportunities and turn their knowledge into commercial growth.

The Role

This is a varied position that sits across engineering, service, customer management and sales. You'll be responsible for:

  • Managing and supporting a team of 3 within the Repairs function
  • Conducting regular one-to-ones, performance reviews and supporting team development
  • Acting as a key point of contact for customers and managing escalated issues
  • Visiting customers to review service performance and identify opportunities
  • Carrying out customer site visits and surveys, averaging around one visit per week
  • Managing larger repair, refurbishment and upgrade projects
  • Coordinating engineers, suppliers, subcontractors and customers
  • Investigating recurring technical issues, failures and warranty claims
  • Working closely with engineering, maintenance and quality teams to improve service delivery
  • Reviewing engineering reports and customer feedback
  • Identifying opportunities for additional works, upgrades and service revenue
  • Developing relationships with existing customers and identifying new customers
  • Supporting quotations and proposals
  • Working alongside the Business Development Manager to generate new business
  • Contributing directly to business growth through commission-generating sales activity

What We're Looking For

We're particularly interested in candidates who have a technical engineering background and understand the realities of working in the field. Ideally, you'll have experience with gates & barriers, although candidates from related sectors such as automatic doors, industrial doors, access systems or similar engineering environments will also be considered. You could be:

  • An experienced Service Engineer who has moved into a supervisory or management position
  • A Senior Engineer ready to take the next step off the tools
  • A Service Supervisor looking for their first Service Manager position
  • An Engineer who has transitioned into a technical/office-based role and wants greater responsibility
  • An existing Service Manager looking for a more varied and commercially focused position
  • Someone with strong technical knowledge who enjoys dealing with customers and wants to develop the commercial side of their career

You don't need to have a traditional sales background. What matters is that you're technically credible, commercially minded, confident with customers and comfortable identifying opportunities.

Essential Experience

  • Engineering, technical, maintenance or field-service background
  • Experience managing engineers, technicians or supervisors
  • Strong understanding of repairs and maintenance
  • Confident dealing directly with customers
  • Able to understand technical documentation, drawings and specifications
  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding ability
  • Commercial awareness and an interest in business development
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Must live within a commutable distance of Crawley

The Package

£48,000 basic salary negotiable for the right candidate. Uncapped commission scheme. Realistic additional earnings of approximately £15,000 - £30,000 per year, with genuine potential to earn more through uncapped commission. Realistic OTE: £60,000 - £80,000+

You'll also have the opportunity to progress your career within a growing business, with a varied position that gives you genuine responsibility across service, engineering, customers and commercial growth.

What's Different About This Role?

This isn't a role where you'll be sat behind a desk all day. You'll have the opportunity to use your engineering experience, manage a team, build customer relationships, visit sites, manage projects and develop new business. Equally, you're not expected to be out selling door-to-door. It's about using your technical knowledge and relationships within the industry to understand customer requirements, identify opportunities and help grow the service and repairs side of the business. There may also be opportunities for international travel as the business develops. This is completely optional and would only be for those who want the opportunity.

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone who is ambitious, technically capable and commercially driven, with the desire to take the next step in their career. If you've spent years on the tools and are now looking for more responsibility, better earning potential and a clear progression route, this could be an excellent opportunity.
