Associate Director | Quantity Surveying | Cambridge, UK

TSA Riley is seeking a highly motivated Chartered Quantity Surveyor ready to operate at Associate Director level within our Cambridge office. You will have the capability to lead and deliver a full range of pre and post‑contract services on complex construction projects across the Cambridgeshire region. As one of the most established and respected consultancies in the Cambridgeshire market, TSA Riley is proud to partner with a diverse client base on some of the area’s most prestigious and technically challenging developments. Our recent work includes collaborations with several of Cambridge’s historic university colleges, helping to preserve and enhance some of the UK’s most remarkable buildings. Team members enjoy the autonomy to balance time between our Cambridge office, project sites and remote work.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Working in a leadership role alongside a team of Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers reporting directly into the Executive Director whilst providing a cost consulting role to our clients.
  • Ensuring that our clients achieve their stated objectives through close teamwork, proactive cost control and the provision of contractual advice.
  • Managing clients and taking an active role in the profit and loss management for individual client accounts.
  • Attending and chairing meetings with clients.
  • Preparing financial reports and overseeing those of junior staff within the business.
  • Leading on the communication of project status with the client.
  • Providing advice on contractors, specialists, procurement routes, cost and programme solutions.
  • Providing advice on suitability and preparation of contract documents.
  • Preparing management reports.
  • Monitoring performance milestones and deliverables.
  • Administering cost/variation procedures.
  • Carrying out full post‑contract surveying duties including establishing the effect of variations, settlement of accounts and disputes.
  • Providing day‑to‑day cost management of projects from estimate preparation and cost planning through to final account settlements.
  • Taking an active role in managing, mentoring and supporting the development of junior staff within the Cambridge office.
  • Building strong relationships and seeking to identify business opportunities with existing and new clients in the local market.

Desired qualifications and experience

  • A relevant degree or masters qualification in quantity surveying or a similar equivalent subject.
  • Full membership of a relevant professional body such as the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is desired.
  • Prior experience of working on historic and/or listed buildings is desirable.
  • The ability to autonomously carry out a full range of pre‑ and post‑contract duties from conception through to final accounting.
  • Strong cost planning skills and the ability to review technical drawings and fully grasp the complexities of elements that may not be shown on a drawing but need to be considered for work on historic buildings.
  • Strong client‑facing and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, with demonstrable experience of acting in the lead role to the client and providing traditional cost management services.
  • Familiarity with common forms of contract such as JCT and NEC.
