The Lead Flue Gas Treatment Engineer provides technical leadership for flue gas treatment systems used in energy‑from‑waste, biomass and industrial combustion projects. Based in the UK, the role supports projects from initial sales engagement through detailed engineering, execution, commissioning and operational optimisation. This position leads a small specialist engineering group and contributes to a wider international engineering network. The role focuses on advancing design capability, ensuring consistent technical standards, supporting project integration across global teams and developing expertise in new fuels and emerging system configurations.
Role Responsibilities
- FGT system design — Lead process and mechanical design for flue gas treatment systems across global projects, including dry/semi‑dry/wet scrubbing, fabric filters, reactor towers, cyclones, reagent injection systems, conveying systems, silos/dosing, SCR and SNCR.
- Sales-phase support — Provide technical input during proposal development, bid evaluations and customer technical meetings.
- Engineering documentation — Prepare, review and approve engineering calculations, PFDs, P&IDs, datasheets and specifications.
- Supplier evaluation — Work with procurement to assess suppliers and review vendor technical documentation.
- Design assurance — Participate in HAZOPs, design reviews and technical risk assessments.
- Commissioning leadership — Provide technical direction during commissioning, performance testing and plant optimisation.
- Operational troubleshooting — Support operating plants with diagnostics and specialist technical guidance.
- Cross‑discipline collaboration — Work closely with boiler/process, mechanical, piping, EC&I, procurement and project management teams.
- Standards development — Maintain and improve internal engineering standards, design manuals and calculation tools.
- Team development — Mentor and develop engineers within the FGT discipline.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 10 years’ process engineering experience, including 5+ years in flue gas treatment or industrial air pollution control.
- Proven experience delivering FGT systems from concept through commissioning.
- Strong understanding of combustion processes and emissions control technologies.
- Experience producing engineering calculations, specifications and process documentation.
- Strong communication skills and experience providing technical leadership.
- Willingness to travel internationally when required.
