We are seeking an experienced HV Commissioning Engineer to support the commissioning and energisation of a grid‑scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Scotland. The role will focus on the safe testing, commissioning, energisation and handover of HV electrical infrastructure, working closely with construction, commissioning, DNO and client teams. This is a site‑based role on a safety‑critical energy transition project connected to the transmission or distribution network.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute HV commissioning and energisation activities in line with project procedures, commissioning plans and UK electrical safety rules.
- Commission HV/MV switchgear, transformers, protection systems, grid interfaces and auxiliary systems associated with the BESS.
- Carry out functional testing, protection testing, secondary injection and energisation activities.
- Prepare, review and implement commissioning procedures, test documentation and method statements.
- Perform HV/LV switching, isolations and permit‑to‑work activities in accordance with site and network rules.
- Interface with construction teams, commissioning managers, DNOs/SSEN, National Grid (if applicable) and client representatives.
- Support system handover, punch‑list close‑out and completion of commissioning records.
- Identify, troubleshoot and resolve commissioning issues, escalating risks or constraints as required.
- Participate in site walkdowns, readiness reviews and final acceptance testing.
- Maintain strict compliance with HSE requirements, ensuring all commissioning activities are carried out safely.
Essential Experience
- Proven experience as an HV Commissioning Engineer on BESS, substations, renewables or power infrastructure projects.
- Strong background in HV/MV electrical systems, grid connections and protection schemes.
- Experience working on energy transition projects (battery storage, renewables, grid reinforcement).
- Solid understanding of UK electrical safety rules, PTW systems and isolation procedures.
- Experience working with DNOs (e.g. SSEN) or ICPs.
- Ability to work independently on site in a commissioning‑led environment.
