Our client in the Newcastle area is looking for a Head of Engineering. As the Head of Engineering, you will lead the technical delivery of the project, ensuring design excellence, compliance, and seamless coordination across engineering, construction, and stakeholder teams. This strategic leadership role demands deep technical expertise, strong project management capabilities, and a collaborative mindset to drive successful execution of a complex HVDC infrastructure programme. This role is on an initial one-year contract outside IR35.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic & Leadership
- Provide oversight and direction to all engineering discipline teams.
- Ensure compliance with British Standards (BS) and relevant industry regulations.
- Lead coordination and resolution of technical deviations.
- Align engineering design delivery with construction programme milestones.
- Chair and lead technical design reviews.
- Develop and maintain the Metlen Engineering Management Plan.
- Manage the Engineering Consultant contract and key vendor design packages.
- Ensure adherence to SR188 Design Management standard.
- Present technical updates and progress reports to senior stakeholders.
- Support contract negotiations with expert input on technical clauses and deliverables.
- Lead coordination with third-party stakeholders per contractual obligations.
- Report against client review obligations and ensure timely submissions.
- Oversee engineering responsibilities for procurement package ownership and RFQ documentation.
- Technical bid evaluations and contracted package oversight.
- Contribute to commissioning strategy and completions planning.
- Monitor construction and installation for design and quality compliance.
- Facilitate coordination between engineering, quality, and completions teams to ensure readiness before civil works.
- Support implementation of Construction Work Packages (CWPs).
- Manage engineering change through formal project change processes.
- Draft contractual correspondence on technical matters.
- Ensure timely internal reviews and approvals.
- Embed CDM and Safety by Design principles throughout all engineering outputs.
- Lead handover of design deliverables to construction teams.
- Drive lessons learned and post-project reviews to enhance future HVDC project delivery.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to organisational capability development.
Qualifications & Experience
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent.
- Proven leadership in large-scale infrastructure or HVDC projects.
- Strong understanding of UK engineering standards and CDM regulations.
- Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and external consultants.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
