The Opportunity

Our Energy and Sustainability department is a leading practice that advises broadly across the energy transition, covering energy infrastructure, renewables projects, energy efficiency, energy markets and regulations. A key part of our practice focuses on real estate related energy infrastructure – covering everything from heat networks and utility connections through to microgrids, renewable energy generation and storage, EV chargepoints and connected regulatory issues. We have a market leading heat network practice, advising developers, landlords and operators/suppliers on the transition to the regulated heat market. We also advise on grant funded and financed energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects, helping our clients deliver large scale retrofit programmes. We work closely with our construction, real estate, planning, corporate, banking and tax teams to provide seamless advice on energy projects. We are at the forefront of innovation in the sector, helping our clients navigate the energy transition and how that impacts the built environment. This is a great opportunity for an experienced associate to join our UK team to focus on the developments in the energy market.

What you'll be doing

  • Advising developers, landlords and operators on the procurement, negotiation and management of heat networks (including concessions, supply agreements, outsourced services and ongoing regulatory compliance)
  • Advising on energy projects, including solar, wind and battery storage
  • Advising on large scale retrofit programmes (including grant funded, 'Energy as a Service' and subscription models)
  • Support on regulatory issues relating to electricity (generation, distribution and supply) and heat networks
  • Advising on utility connections including ICP and IDNO arrangements
  • Advising on Power Purchase Agreements and Heat Supply Agreements
  • Advising on EV Chargepoints and related infrastructure
  • Active participation in marketing initiatives aimed at the energy sector
  • Building and maintaining effective client relationships

What you'll need

The firm has a Career Development Framework which sets out the competencies we expect of those at the Senior Associate grade. In particular for this role we require:

  • Candidates with 4 years' relevant post qualification experience gained from a reputable firm or in-house
  • Experience on regulatory issues relating to utilities; experience of energy projects and heat networks
  • Excellent technical skills
  • Strong client focus
  • Ability to prioritise work effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to deal with innovative structures and bespoke documents
  • Drive and enthusiasm
  • Excellent academic record
