Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust-Research Unit (LOMWRU) is a Lao-UK project that conducts targeted clinical and public health research aimed at discovering and developing affordable interventions that measurably improve health in resource‑limited parts of the world. The research unit has operated in Lao PDR since 2000 and is based in the Microbiology Laboratory, Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR.
Job Summary
The Molecular Microbiologist will take an active role within the Molecular Bacteriology team at LOMWRU, assisting with day‑to‑day team operations, leading new and existing projects related to human health and One Health topics, and providing support and training to junior staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out routine molecular diagnostic work supporting the Microbiology Laboratory and participate in ongoing and new project work.
- Assist and advise in problem solving for molecular activities, supporting junior staff.
- Organise molecular results on the server and in databases.
- Supervise and conduct PCR assays and their quality assessment (QA), both external and internal.
- Support ongoing Next Generation Sequencing research within the laboratory, focusing on Bacteriology, including assay development, optimisation, data analysis, and technical assistance to PIs.
- Provide support and, where agreed, lead additional laboratory projects or routine molecular biology work at LOMWRU.
- Support the Heads of the Molecular Teams, Laboratory Manager, and Deputy Laboratory Manager in the day‑to‑day running of the Molecular Laboratory.
- Advise on shortages of equipment, staff, and materials, or other operational issues.
- Maintain comprehensive, tidy record‑keeping of processed samples and results, and communicate these results to relevant laboratory and clinical teams.
- Circulate regular reports to all relevant parties.
- Ensure samples (isolates, DNA, etc.) are stored appropriately and that all documentation is kept up to date.
- Participate and lead meetings concerning diagnostic and project work, the laboratory, and other related activities.
- Provide training to staff from both LOMWRU and Microbiology in laboratory techniques.
- Attend training courses required for the role, as determined by the Laboratory Manager, Area Safety Advisor, or Head of Molecular Bacteriology or Virology.
