Overview
Role Purpose
We are looking for a Scientific Assistant to support trait enablement projects on a 12-month fixed term contract. Our team works at the interface between molecular biology and plant transformation using state-of-the-art genome-editing tools to develop tropical crops with novel traits. This role requires a strong understanding of molecular biology concepts and an ability and willingness to learn new wet-lab and in silico techniques and processes. The post also requires meeting our internal specifications and standards to provide a high-quality service for our Crop Biotechnology clients, under close supervision and direction from our team of expert scientists.
Key Responsibilities
- Isolate and transform protoplasts from various crop species
- Perform reporter gene assays to measure gene expression or cellular activity
- Conduct experiments to optimize and improve assay efficiency
- Programming and supervision of liquid handlers for automated and semi-automated processes
- Support molecular cloning to design and develop plant transformation vectors
- Supporting maintenance of relevant laboratory stocks
- Collaborate across multiple projects to help the team reach their goals
Requirements
Essential
- BSc/MSc in Plant Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, or any other related discipline
- Aseptic handling and subculturing of biological material
- Experience with standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., molecular cloning, PCR, bacterial transformation and DNA purification and QC)
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment
- Strong communication skills, able to discuss complex problems clearly
- Excellent organization and adherence to strict QC and assurance practices
Desirable
- At least 1 year working experience in a research environment (academic or commercial)
- Good understanding of gene expression and its regulation
- Understanding of RNAi biology
- Knowledge of and experience with gene editing technologies
- Previous experience with working on plants
