The Overlay Designer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and refining overlay design solutions across the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games venues. Reporting to the Overlay Project Lead, this role produces detailed, accurate, and compliant design information to support the planning, procurement, construction, and operational delivery of temporary infrastructure. The Overlay Designer works closely with the Principal Designer, Functional Areas, contractors, and venue teams to translate operational requirements into practical, buildable overlay designs, ensuring all plans align with CDM 2015 regulations, health & safety standards, and venue constraints.
Working arrangements: The role will commence in the Organising Company’s Glasgow city centre office, with visits required to competition venues to fully deliver the responsibilities of the role. The location for the role will transition to be based at a competition venue as we approach the Games. The role will be contracted for 40 hours per week, with requirements to be in the office aligned to the Organising Company's planned working pattern. All travel to your place of work will be at your own cost. During the Games operational period, shift patterns are likely to be required which could include weekends.
Key Responsibilities- Develop overlay design drawings, layouts, and technical documentation to support all phases of project delivery.
- Coordinate design inputs from Functional Areas and convert operational requirements into practical, compliant design solutions.
- Work closely with the Principal Designers, the EDP team, the OC Overlay team, and the Principal Contractor to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficient design integration.
- Manage design development through V3, and V4 stages, resolving technical issues, clashes, and design interfaces in a timely manner.
- Support the assessment of design risks, temporary works requirements, and health & safety considerations aligned with CDM 2015.
- Ensure all overlay designs meet venue constraints, statutory requirements, accessibility standards, and internal design guidelines.
- Maintain up-to-date drawing registers, issue logs, and design records, ensuring clear communication of design changes and updates.
- Support procurement and construction teams by preparing accurate quantities, layouts, specifications, and supporting information.
- Conduct site visits to validate design assumptions, identify constraints, verify installation needs, and support operational readiness.
- Assist in producing design documentation for permits, approvals, and regulatory submissions as required.
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in overlay design, event design, temporary works, architecture, or related fields.
- Experience producing technical drawings and layouts for major events, temporary structures, or complex venue environments.
- Proven ability to manage multiple design tasks and coordinate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience supporting construction delivery and understanding the practical application of temporary infrastructure designs.
- Strong technical drawing skills using CAD or BIM platforms (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Vectorworks).
- Excellent design coordination skills with the ability to interpret operational briefs and translate them into workable solutions.
- Good understanding of temporary structures, site logistics, utilities, and construction methodologies.
- Ability to manage design queries, resolve interface issues, and communicate complex information clearly.
- Familiarity with CDM 2015 regulations, accessibility requirements, and health & safety considerations is advantageous.
- Effective planning, organisation, and documentation management skills.
- High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality design outputs.
- Proactive, solution-focused, and able to adapt designs quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
