Reporting directly to the Catering, Cleaning and Recycling Manager and working closely with the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Project Lead, the Catering, Cleaning and Recycling Deputy Manager will support the planning, coordination, and delivery of catering, cleaning, waste management, and recycling services across competition venues. The role will assist in ensuring services are delivered in line with sustainability objectives, operational standards, and service expectations appropriate to a major international sporting event.
Responsibilities will include:
- Supporting venue catering service plans, cleaning strategies, and waste and recycling systems.
- Working with suppliers and contractors to ensure alignment with Glasgow 2026 sustainability and service requirements.
- Playing a key role in day-to-day operational coordination and Games-time delivery.
- Deputising for the Cleaning, Recycling & Catering Manager as required.
Working arrangements:
The role will initially be based at the Organising Company’s Glasgow city centre office, with visits to competition venues as required to support the effective delivery of responsibilities. As the Games approach, the role will transition to being primarily based at your assigned competition venue. The position is initially contracted for 37.5 hours per week (with a 30-minute lunch break), with office attendance aligned to the Organising Company’s working pattern. During the Games-time operational period, shift patterns will apply and may include evenings and weekends.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the planning, procurement, and delivery of catering, cleaning, waste management, and recycling services to international event standards.
- Assist in the development and implementation of venue catering plans for athletes, workforce, VIPs, and spectators, ensuring services are safe, inclusive, and culturally appropriate.
- Support catering logistics planning, including kitchen and server fit-outs, food storage, cold chain management, and stock distribution across venues.
- Contribute to the implementation of sustainability-led catering initiatives, including local sourcing, food waste reduction, and use of reusable or compostable packaging.
- Assist in the development and delivery of venue cleaning plans (Front of House and Back of House), ensuring high standards of hygiene and presentation.
- Support the implementation of waste and recycling management plans, including bin placement, maximising recycling rates and minimising landfill, with provision for clinical and medical waste where required.
- Work with suppliers and contractors to support compliance with food safety, environmental health, sustainability, and service level requirements.
- Support operational teams during Games-time delivery, assisting with issue resolution, maintaining hygiene standards, and ensuring positive participant and spectator experiences.
- Assist with post-Games decommissioning, catering close-down, waste recovery activities, and sustainability reporting.
- Act as a point of escalation and deputise for the Cleaning, Recycling & Catering Manager when required.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise:
Experience:
- Experience supporting catering operations for large-scale, multi-venue sporting or public events.
- Experience assisting with sourcing, contracting, or managing catering, cleaning, and waste suppliers, including local and sustainable providers.
- Demonstrable involvement in implementing sustainable catering practices, such as food waste reduction, local sourcing, and inclusive menu provision.
- Working knowledge of food safety compliance, cold chain management, and allergen control.
- Experience supporting teams during live event operations in high-pressure environments.
- Experience working collaboratively with venue management, logistics, sustainability, and health & safety teams.
Competencies:
- Strong organisational and operational coordination skills within catering and venue services.
- Knowledge of nutrition, food safety, allergen management, and HACCP principles.
- Understanding of environmental health and sustainability guidelines.
- Awareness of licensing requirements for large-scale events.
- Ability to support supplier management and contract compliance.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and stakeholder engagement.
- Sound commercial awareness with the ability to support budget management and cost control.
