We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Temporary Industrial Placement- HMI Design Engineer to join our Electrical/ Electronic systems team in Hinckley. This is a unique opportunity for a design related student to develop and test a broad range of skills in a thriving environment.

In this role, you will work within the Electrical Electronic Systems team and gain broad exposure to the full lifecycle of automotive HMI development, from initial design through to production. You’ll contribute to key areas including UI and interaction design, HMI feature development, and User Acceptance Testing across our instrument clusters and connected systems. This placement offers valuable insight into how designers collaborate within an industrial environment, helping you understand how individual design decisions fit into the wider manufacturing and development process.

As a student HMI Design Engineer, you will immerse yourself in essential engineering processes, including:

  • Support UAT activities, including setup, test script creation, and reporting.
  • Conduct research and benchmarking on digital interfaces and emerging automotive trends.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining HMI design systems, colour palettes, and interaction patterns, including managing Figma project updates.
  • Opportunity for secondary rotation within Marketing or Technical Publications.
  • Complete an induction programme to prepare for initial projects.
  • Work effectively within an open‑plan, collaborative team environment.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Undergraduates currently studying Product Design, UI Design, Graphic Design, or related visual/digital design disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc.).
  • Strong visual design skills and understanding of layout, typography, and colour.
  • Modules or coursework involving UX, interaction design, motion design or human factors would be an advantage.
  • Experience with Jira or similar project‑tracking tools. Exposure to prototyping, animation, or 3D tools would be an advantage.
