Summary of what the candidate must have to apply:

  • Minimum 4-6 years' planning policy experience within a local authority or consultancy.
  • Strong knowledge of UK planning legislation, planning policy frameworks and Local Plan processes.
  • Extensive experience preparing Infrastructure Delivery Plans (IDPs) - essential.
  • Experience supporting Local Plan preparation, monitoring and review.
  • Ability to provide clear, evidence-based planning policy advice.
  • Excellent written, verbal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Able to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Green Belt, open space policy and Examination in Public procedures is desirable.

The role:

To provide specialist planning policy advice and support the delivery of Stockport Council's statutory planning functions, including preparation and monitoring of the Local Plan and associated policy documents. The candidate should have extensive experience preparing Infrastructure Delivery Plans (IDPs). The role will ensure compliance with national and local planning legislation and contribute to strategic planning objectives.

Key accountabilities:

  • Contribute to the preparation, monitoring and review of the Council's planning policies, ensuring statutory requirements are met.
  • Prepare and review Infrastructure Delivery Plans (IDPs).
  • Provide professional planning policy advice to colleagues, elected members, developers and the public.
  • Represent the Council's spatial planning interests throughout statutory plan-making processes, including Examination in Public.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in planning legislation, regulations and national guidance.
  • Support Development Management by providing policy input on major planning applications and pre-application enquiries.
  • Provide project support for the Local Plan.
  • Prepare reports, briefing notes and consultation responses on planning policy matters.

Requirements/key criteria:

  • Experience: Minimum 4-6 years' planning policy experience within a local authority or consultancy environment.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of UK planning legislation, planning policy frameworks and Local Plan processes.
  • Skills: Ability to analyse complex planning issues and provide clear, evidence-based advice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
  • Extensive experience preparing Infrastructure Delivery Plans (IDPs).
  • Desirable: Experience of Green Belt and open space policy issues.
  • Familiarity with Examination in Public procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
