Pay Rate: £20.31 per hour PAYE. Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours. Basic DBS required. Hybrid. This opening assignment is for 3 months. Location: Telford TF3 4EJ.

Role

We are seeking an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to support enforcement and regulatory work within the private rented sector. You will be responsible for inspecting residential properties, identifying hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS), and ensuring landlords comply with relevant housing legislation. The role involves working with landlords, tenants and other agencies to improve housing conditions, investigate complaints and take enforcement action where required. This is a hybrid role supporting a busy local authority housing standards team.

Key accountabilities

  • Carry out inspections of private sector properties in line with HHSRS standards
  • Identify hazards and assess risks within residential accommodation
  • Investigate complaints relating to housing conditions
  • Enforce housing legislation where necessary, including serving statutory notices
  • Support work relating to HMO regulation, licensing and compliance
  • Provide guidance and advice to landlords and tenants on housing standards
  • Prepare evidence and documentation to support enforcement action
  • Maintain accurate records and case files
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies where required

Requirements / Key criteria

  • Experience working within Private Sector Housing or Housing Enforcement
  • Strong working knowledge of Housing Act legislation and related regulations
  • Experience using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Experience investigating complaints and identifying housing hazards
  • Previous involvement in housing enforcement action
  • Knowledge of HMO licensing and regulation
  • Ability to prepare reports, notices and case documentation
  • Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise effectively
