Location: Rugby, Warwickshire, CV21 1EA

Office-based

Key requirements:

  • The qualifications are a HGV class 2 licence and experience in waster operations, ideally a qualified driving assessor too.
  • Previous experience in a training/coaching role, or significant experience as a driver within waste management or another service industry.
  • Experience developing and maintaining training matrices and competency records in a fleet, waste, highways or local authority environment.
  • Good working knowledge of DVSA guidance, Operator License compliance, and core Health & Safety legislation as it applies to waste and fleet operations.
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate (or equivalent), or IOSH membership/working towards it β€” the practical floor for anyone owning a compliance matrix, ensuring credibility with HSE and DVSA auditors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a comprehensive training and competency matrix covering all operational roles (drivers, loaders, street cleansing operatives, and other frontline staff).
  • Deliver training to a consistently high standard, aligned with Council training standards and contractual/legislative obligations, tailoring content to specific operational needs.
  • Coach drivers to improve driving skills, reduce accidents, and prevent Operator License contraventions.
  • Arrange and coordinate any specialist training delivery via internal colleagues or external providers where it falls outside personal expertise, ensuring every session is properly recorded against the matrix.
  • Deliver core inductions for new permanent, temporary and agency staff, and coordinate site inductions and policy briefings for agency workers before they commence duties.
  • Conduct driver assessments, vehicle familiarisation, walk-round check training, and periodic reassessments.
