Working Arrangements: Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). It is expected that the majority of the role will be undertaken on-site, however, there will be an opportunity for some hybrid working; this can be discussed at interview.

Role Introduction: The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and mentoring a team to oversee the financial operations of the business, ensuring robust financial control, regulatory compliance, audit preparation and timely, accurate reporting. This hands-on role plays a key part in supporting strategic decision-making, developing and evolving effective processes, managing cash flow, and driving financial performance; ultimately ensuring that the finance function of the business supports growth.

The Finance Controller will work closely with the senior leadership team to provide sharp financial insight driven by accurate and timely data and robust controls and will be accountable for ensuring that the company’s financial health supports continued growth and operational excellence. A key requirement of this role will be to identify and close control process gaps in the finance function following periods of growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management: Line manage, guide and develop a small but highly capable and motivated Finance Team. Setting team and individual targets, monitoring effectiveness and providing support where required.
  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger.
  • Develop and maintain strong financial controls, discipline and processes ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit & loss, balance sheet, and cash flow statements for two trading companies and three holding companies.
  • Deliver timely and accurate financial reports to the Board and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Lead year-end close and coordinate with external accountants and auditors to ensure compliance and adherence to best practice.
  • Deliver quarterly bank covenant reporting ensuring that the business remains compliant at all times.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and manage annual budgets and forecasts. Monitor performance against budget and explain variances. Support long-term financial planning and scenario analysis.
  • Cash Flow & Working Capital: Manage cash flow forecasting and the daily cash position of the business. Optimise working capital, including control of debtor and supplier payments. Support contract pricing and client profitability analysis.
  • Compliance & Governance: Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards, tax regulations (VAT, PAYE, Corporation Tax), and statutory reporting requirements. Act as a key liaison point with HMRC, auditors, and external advisers. Support insurance, regulatory, and contractual financial requirements.
  • Systems & Process Improvement: Maintain and improve financial systems and reporting tools; this may include the long-term implementation of a new employee resource planning system. Drive efficiencies through process improvements and automation. Ensure financial data integrity across systems.
  • Business Support: Partner with Department leads across the business to provide financial insight on contracts, staffing levels, and margins. Support tenders, bids, and client pricing with accurate financial analysis. Contribute to strategic projects and business growth initiatives.

To be successful and effective in this role you will have:

  • Accountancy qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CIMA), or be qualified through demonstrable experience.
  • Proven experience as a Finance Controller or in a Senior Finance Manager role.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience and team building skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast paced, rapidly growing and constantly changing environment.
  • Experience of audit processes and be comfortable leading teams to work within audit frameworks.
  • Demonstrable experience of effective forecasting and budgeting.
  • Management account and credit control experience.
  • An ability to work with and challenge a Senior Leadership Team.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong systems and excel skills.
  • The skills and personability to be a collaborator and team player.
  • Experience of working in the security industry.
  • Prior experience of implementing employee resource planning systems.
  • Experience of working in a multi-entity environment.
  • Worked in an SME or owner led environment.
  • Prior use of Sage 50 or similar Sage products.
