Role and Team

You\\u2019ll join a dynamic, friendly team of Consultant Microbiologists who together provide a full diagnostic and infection prevention service across the region. If you have dual accreditation or experience in Infectious Diseases, you\\u2019ll have the option to participate in ward-based work and Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) clinics. The balance between clinical and supporting professional activities (SPA) will be tailored to your skills, interests, and lifestyle.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise diagnostic services, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance with UKAS accreditation.
  • Provide expert clinical and laboratory advice to hospital and primary care teams, supporting optimal investigation and treatment of infection.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in specialties such as ICU, Haematology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Surgery, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to infection management.
  • Contribute to infection prevention and control policies, antimicrobial stewardship, and outbreak management.
  • Take a lead role or develop a specialist interest within the department 82 whether laboratory development, clinical liaison, infection control, or antimicrobial management.
  • Participate in the 1:4 consultant on-call rota, which is fully supported by remote access, ensuring work-life balance even when on duty.

The Laboratory and Facilities

The Microbiology Department is exceptionally well-equipped and UKAS-accredited, currently transitioning to the ISO 15189:2022 standard. They provide a comprehensive bacteriology, serology, molecular diagnostics, and mycology service supported by advanced automation, including MALDI-TOF, BioFire, Cepheid PCR, Vitek 2, and Abbott Architect platforms. The team of skilled Biomedical Scientists, senior technical leads, and IT support staff work closely with consultants to deliver accurate, timely, and clinically relevant results. They use the Apex LIMS system and are fully integrated with Health Protection Scotland through ECOSS for reporting and Observa for epidemiological analysis of antibiotic resistance.

What You\’ll Need

  • Full GMC registration and inclusion on the Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology (or within six months of CCT).
  • FRCPath or equivalent, with broad-based experience in diagnostic microbiology and infection control.
  • A collaborative spirit, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships across specialties and services.
  • A commitment to quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
