Overview: I have been assigned by an NHS Trust in the UK to help them recruit a Consultant in Anaesthetics & ITU on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months.
Facilities & Location: The Department of Anaesthesia is based on the first floor adjacent to the operating theatres, with secretarial support in the same office. The Intensive Care Unit is located on the fourth floor providing Level 2 and 3 care. ICU supports anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgeries. The Critical Care Directorate office is located alongside the ICU. All offices are equipped with modern facilities. The operating theatres have rest rooms and a seminar room, shared by nursing and medical staff. A modern, wellâequipped trainee's area is available for trainees.
Scope of Service: A comprehensive anaesthetic service is available for all routine and emergency surgical procedures for inâpatients and dayâcase patients in the following specialties: General surgery, vascular surgery, Urology, Orthopaedic surgery, spinal surgery, Gynaecology (including routine and highârisk obstetrics), Ophthalmology, ENT, Dental and MaxilloâFacial Surgery & Highârisk anaesthetic assessment clinic and CPET service.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and promote multiâdisciplinary teamwork within the speciality and those associated with the critical care services.
- Responsibility with all consultant colleagues for providing evidenceâbased standards of care for all patients.
- Take an active part in the formal teaching and practical training & supervision of junior staff.
- Assume responsibility for professional supervision and management of nonâconsultant grade medical staff.
- Monitor junior staff locum arrangements where appropriate.
- Concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal, of their trainees.
- Take part in risk management, governance activities and other directorate activities & contribute (in coâoperation with the Audit Committee) on a regular basis to the clinical audit process undertaken within the Trust, and where appropriate at a broader regional and national level.
