Overview
As a Principal Data Scientist at Tripadvisor, you will lead experimentation strategy across the organization, raising the bar on measurement quality and decision-making. You’ll build self-service standards, tooling, and protocols so teams can run experiments with minimal central support. You’ll tackle difficult measurement questions on low-traffic surfaces and long-horizon outcomes, shaping the measurement culture across Product, Engineering, and Data Platform. You’ll influence leadership with rigorous analysis and design scalable, high-impact approaches.
Responsibilities
- Set and propagate technical standards for experimentation across Product Data Science, including A/B tests, quasi-experimental, and Bayesian methods
- Partner with Product, Engineering and Data Platform teams to improve experimentation velocity while maintaining rigour
- Assess how experimentation affects platform health and growth and communicate implications to leadership
- Own measurement approaches for complex questions where standard experiments fail, designing methods rather than selecting them
- Develop and validate statistical methods, including simulation-based verification
- Act as the final technical authority on measurement validity and adjudicate disputed results
- Standardise recurring analytical and experimentation processes with automation and AI where beneficial
- Design methodological improvements with broad, org-wide impact (variance reduction, low-traffic surfaces, surrogate metrics)
- Mentor senior data scientists and grow the team’s measurement thinking
- Advise on when experimentation is not the right tool and what to do instead
Key requirements
- Extensive experience in data science or a quantitative role with impact on a product organisation
- Authoritative command of experimentation forms (design, variance reduction, causal inference, bandits, Bayesian methods)
- Expert Python and SQL skills; hands-on with statistical modelling and ML techniques (regression, classification, clustering)
- Ability to define and operationalise product and feature-level metrics from scratch
- Proven track record of enabling teams with tooling, protocols, and self-service capabilities
- Strong partnership skills across Product, Engineering, Data Platform, and central functions
- Ability to assess impact of product decisions on platform health and growth
- Experience standardising processes across multiple teams, with AI/automation to scale
- Critical thinking and the ability to judge trustworthiness of results
