A career at KBR can change the world - and change your life. If you're ready, let's get to it.

The Opportunity

At KBR, we deliver innovative solutions that help solve some of the world's most complex challenges. As part of our growing Defence and Nuclear business, we're seeking an experienced Nuclear Safety Engineer to provide nuclear safety leadership, assurance, and subject matter expertise across major infrastructure and engineering programmes supporting UK Defence.

This is a high-impact opportunity to influence nationally significant nuclear infrastructure projects, ensuring that safety remains at the heart of programme delivery while supporting proportionate, risk-informed decision-making. The role offers exposure to complex engineering environments, senior stakeholders, and some of the most strategically important programmes within the UK defence sector

What You'll Be Doing

As Nuclear Safety Engineer, you'll provide specialist advice and assurance across the project lifecycle, helping multidisciplinary teams understand, integrate, and deliver nuclear safety requirements.

You will:

  • Provide nuclear safety advice, challenge, and assurance across complex infrastructure programmes.

  • Review safety submissions, technical documentation, safety case evidence, and assurance records.

  • Support governance, compliance, and continuous improvement activities.

  • Assess the nuclear safety significance of technical issues, design changes, and programme outputs.

  • Contribute to design reviews, technical assurance activities, and readiness assessments.

  • Support programme teams in understanding and applying nuclear safety requirements.

  • Engage with customers, technical authorities, supply chain partners, and senior stakeholders.

  • Drive a proportionate, evidence-based approach to nuclear safety and risk management.

  • Share lessons learned and support capability development across the wider organisation

    Experience Required

We are looking for a Nuclear Safety professional with significant experience in nuclear engineering, nuclear safety, defence nuclear operations, or safety-critical infrastructure environments. You will have experience assessing nuclear safety implications, reviewing technical and safety documentation, and providing expert advice and assurance within complex engineering programmes.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders, applying proportionate, risk-informed decision making to support programme delivery. Experience with nuclear plant, submarine systems, reactor facilities, safety cases, assurance activities, or regulated nuclear environments is highly desirable. Experience within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, MOD programmes, authorised or licensed sites, or nuclear infrastructure projects would be advantageous

Candidates should hold a degree in Engineering, Science, Nuclear Technology, or a related technical discipline and be Chartered Engineer status (or actively working toward chartership). A strong understanding of nuclear safety principles, hazard management, safety functions, defence-in-depth, and risk-based assurance is essential.
