Trinity House works for the benefit and safety of all mariners as a General Lighthouse Authority and maritime charity. Our people are central to our reputation as a leading maritime organisation, as is our commitment as an employer to developing the skills, capabilities and potential of our workforce.

An opportunity to shape the future of Trinity House lighthouse maintenance. Trinity House is seeking an exceptional Lighthouse Manager to take a leading role in the stewardship of one of the UK's most iconic and technically complex infrastructure estates. This is not a conventional engineering management role. It offers a rare opportunity to directly influence the future direction of lighthouse maintenance, asset management, and operational delivery, ensuring the resilience and safety of critical aids to navigation that support mariners around our coastline.

You will be expected to work from the Harwich office two days each week, one of which must be Monday.

As Lighthouse Manager, you will be responsible for the condition, maintenance, and performance of the lighthouse estate, leading a highly skilled team to deliver safe, efficient, and forward-looking engineering operations. Working closely with the Head of Engineering & Operations and senior stakeholders across the service, you will:

  • Shape maintenance strategy by developing and evolving asset management plans, driving improvements in condition-based maintenance and long-term reliability
  • Lead and inspire a disparate technical workforce, building capability, supporting development, and fostering a high-performance culture
  • Influence future investment and priorities through data-led insight, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Deliver complex operational and project activity, ensuring high standards of engineering quality, safety, and environmental compliance
  • Respond to operational challenges, including managing critical asset failures and emergencies across the estate
  • Drive value and efficiency, optimising resources, managing budgets, and supporting commercial activity where appropriate

This is a role with genuine strategic impact. You will play a key part in:

  • Modernising maintenance approaches across a geographically dispersed and historically significant estate
  • Integrating new technologies and systems into operational delivery
  • Balancing heritage, safety, and innovation in a unique engineering environment
  • Shaping the long-term sustainability and resilience of lighthouse infrastructure

We are seeking a confident and experienced engineering leader who can combine technical expertise with strategic thinking.

  • Sound knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards
  • A proactive, forward-looking approach to continuous improvement and innovation
  • A track record of leading technical teams and delivering high-quality engineering outcomes
  • Strong experience in asset management and maintenance systems, ideally within a complex operational environment
  • Commercial awareness, including budgetary control and contract management
  • Experience in project delivery and operational planning

Qualifications:

  • Degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant engineering discipline
  • A recognised project management qualification (e.g. APM, PRINCE2, Agile, MSP)

At Trinity House, you will be part of an organisation with a proud maritime heritage and a vital modern mission. This role offers:

  • The chance to leave a lasting legacy on a nationally significant estate
  • A unique blend of engineering, operations, and leadership responsibility
  • The opportunity to work with passionate professionals committed to safety and excellence
  • A role where your decisions will have a direct and visible impact on maritime safety

Benefits:

  • Membership in the Civil Service Pension Scheme, with generous employer pension contribution of 28.97%
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Annual Bonus
  • Cycle to work scheme
