- Payroll Administrator
- 6 Month FTC
- £27-33k, hybrid, immediate start
Payroll Administrator
This is a six month contract supporting a business through a big payroll change, as they move onto a brand new payroll system. You'll be part of the payroll team, brought in to test the new system before it goes live, so it's a great chance to see a full payroll transformation from the inside. It's full time at 37.5 hours, hybrid with just 1-2 days a week in the Birmingham city centre office, and pays £27,000 to £33,000 depending on experience.
You'll be an experienced Payroll Administrator who knows payroll well enough to spot straight away when something isn't right. You're methodical, you like checking things properly, and you're happy to raise a hand when a result doesn't add up. Just as importantly, you're available now or very soon, because they want someone in seat straight away.
What You Will Be Doing
- Joining the payroll team to support the move from an older payroll system onto a brand new one, as part of a fixed-term project.
- Supporting user acceptance testing, working through test scenarios to make sure the new system does what payroll actually needs it to do.
- Testing how data from other systems feeds into payroll, checking that hours and pay come through correctly.
- Checking test results against what you'd expect to see, using your payroll knowledge to spot anything that looks off.
- Logging issues clearly and following them up, so problems are fixed before go-live rather than after.
- Helping check that data moved across from the old system has landed correctly in the new one.
- Working closely with the Payroll Manager, who will be your go-to for direction.
- Using your Excel skills to compare, check and pull together data throughout testing.
- Making sure what you test lines up with HMRC rules and the way payroll needs to run day to day.
- Keeping testing moving to tight project deadlines, with a fixed go-live date that everyone is working towards.
What We Need From You
- Solid hands-on payroll experience, enough that you know exactly what a correct result should look like. CIPP membership would be a bonus, but it isn't a must.
- You don't need experience of the new system. If you've been through a payroll system change, data migration or testing before, that will help you hit the ground running.
- Someone methodical who takes real pride in accuracy. Anything missed in testing ends up in real people's pay, so your attention to detail genuinely matters here.
- Confident enough to question things. If a result doesn't look right, you'll say so rather than assume it's fine.
- Comfortable working in Excel at an intermediate level, confident checking and comparing data.
- Calm under pressure. Project deadlines don't move, and you keep a clear head when it gets busy.
- A clear, organised communicator who works well with payroll colleagues, HR and the wider project team.
- Immediately available or on a very short notice period, as they're looking for someone to start straight away.
What's in it for you
- A salary of £27,000 to £33,000 depending on experience.
- Hybrid working, with just 1-2 days a week in the office.
- A city centre base in Birmingham, easy to reach by public transport.
- An immediate start on a clearly defined six month contract.
- A full payroll system go-live on your CV, which is real, marketable project experience.
- Hands-on testing experience, a really useful skill as more businesses move onto new payroll systems.
