An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced HGV professional to take on a dedicated training and assessment role within a busy, safety-focused transport operation. You will be responsible for ensuring new and existing HGV drivers meet the required standards of driving competence, safety, legal compliance, vehicle operation and professional conduct. The role will involve practical assessments, driver inductions, classroom and vehicle-based training, refresher coaching, accompanied driving assessments and post-incident reviews. You will also identify development needs and provide clear, objective feedback and recommendations to management. Key Responsibilities * Deliver driver inductions and practical assessments for new and existing HGV drivers. * Conduct Category C and C+E assessments, including reversing, manoeuvring, coupling and uncoupling. * Assess vehicle checks, defensive driving, safe vehicle operation and professional standards. * Deliver classroom, practical and vehicle-based training. * Provide accompanied drives, route familiarisation and ride-along assessments where required. * Deliver refresher, remedial and targeted coaching based on individual needs. * Carry out post-incident and post-accident driver assessments. * Train drivers in the safe use of trailers, tail-lifts, ramps and load-security equipment. * Promote compliance with drivers' hours, tachograph requirements and transport legislation. * Identify recurring competency, safety and compliance issues and recommend appropriate action. * Monitor driver performance through regular assessments, observations and reassessments. * Maintain accurate training, assessment and competency records. * Produce reports covering training activity, assessment results, development needs and identified risks. * Support driver meetings, safety briefings and ongoing training initiatives. * Contribute to the continuous improvement of driver training and competency processes. * Escalate serious or repeated safety, competency or compliance concerns to management. About You * Full, current Category C+E licence held for a minimum of three years. * Current Driver CPC. * Significant recent professional HGV driving experience, including articulated vehicles. * Strong knowledge of drivers' hours, tachographs and relevant transport legislation. * Practical knowledge of vehicle checks, defect reporting, trailer operation and load security. * Previous experience coaching, instructing, supervising or assessing drivers. * Fair, consistent and objective approach to assessment. * Ability to work independently and effectively with operational teams. Desirable * Recognised driver trainer, instructor or assessor qualification. * Experience delivering structured HGV inductions and practical assessments. * Experience in transport, safety or regulated training. * Knowledge of incident investigation, infringement analysis or driver risk management. * Experience developing training materials, assessment forms or competency frameworks. Candidates with strong relevant experience who do not currently hold a formal trainer or assessor qualification may also be considered, provided they are willing to complete the relevant qualification. Working Requirements The role is primarily based in Redditch, with travel to other operational locations as required. Some UK and occasional overseas travel may be involved, together with flexibility to undertake training and assessments outside standard working hours when operationally required. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am–6pm (1 hour unpaid lunch) Salary: £40,000–£45,000
