Behind this historic setting sits a complex, mission‑critical IT environment that quietly supports teaching, research, administration, conferences and daily college life across a 37‑acre estate. We are now seeking an experienced Senior IT Infrastructure Officer to help maintain, evolve and protect this vital digital infrastructure. This is a rare opportunity to work at a senior technical level in a role that blends hands‑on infrastructure engineering, strategic input, and project leadership, within a collegial and intellectually stimulating environment.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Head of IT, you will be part of a close‑knit team of nine, supporting an IT environment serving over 1,500 users and more than 50 servers. You will take responsibility for the upkeep, security and development of the College’s IT infrastructure, ensuring systems remain secure, resilient, and fit for the future. This is a senior technical role with meaningful autonomy and influence, combining:
- Day‑to‑day stewardship of servers, networks, storage and security
- Leadership and delivery of infrastructure‑focused IT projects
- Trusted‑advisor input into IT strategy, priorities and policy
- High‑quality service delivery to Fellows, staff and students
Your work will be mostly invisible when done well but absolutely essential to the College’s success.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for a broad and varied portfolio, including:
- Maintaining and troubleshooting virtual and physical servers, storage systems, firewalls, other security platforms, networks and cabling
- Contributing to and leading IT infrastructure projects involving networks, security, servers and key business systems
- Acting as a primary technical contact for infrastructure matters with colleagues and external suppliers
- Supporting and shaping IT policies, compliance and security practices across the College
- Providing 2nd line support and mentoring colleagues within the IT team
- Maintaining secure, geographically distributed backups of College data
- Producing clear, accurate technical and system documentation
- Deputising for the Head of IT when required in infrastructure project meetings
About You
You will be a highly technical infrastructure professional who enjoys working in a complex environment where reliability, security and service quality matter.
Experience
- Supporting IT infrastructure within a large user‑base environment
- Managing and supporting servers, networking equipment, firewalls, modern security platforms, storage and cabling
- Delivering or contributing to large‑scale IT infrastructure projects
- Supporting Microsoft server environments, Active Directory, backups and monitoring tools
- Handling advanced support queries with confidence and professionalism
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of networking concepts and infrastructure design (Aruba networking experience highly desirable)
- Experience working with modern security platforms (SIEM, ZTNA, PAM)
- Experience with Microsoft server technologies, SQL infrastructure and backup solutions
- Working knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu) in a server context
- Ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to non‑technical audiences
Qualifications
Networking and Microsoft infrastructure certifications
You will also be a pragmatic problem‑solver, able to work independently, collaborate effectively, and prioritise competing demands with a strong customer‑service mindset.
